Via San Giovanni Vecchio 89, Matera, Basilicate, 75100, Italy
Opened in 1996, I Sassi claims to be Matera's first "grotto hotel," with rooms inside a succession of caves that overlook the huddle of rooftops, descending flights of stone stairs, and the valley floor of Sasso Barisano. Situated on the lip, most of the rooms have terraces and windows that look across the canyon to the Romanesque cathedral that rises on the skyline. The view becomes even more spectacular at night when all the houses are lit up. Rooms are simply furnished, but have modern conveniences, including air-conditioning or heating, a safe, minibar, TV, and Internet access. It's a short walking distance from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Matera's main square, with shops, cafés, and museums all at hand.
