Train Travel

Most trains for the southwest leave from Paris's Gare d'Austerlitz, with direct services to Toulouse and Montauban. Carcassonne connects with either Toulouse or Montpellier.

There are 15 daily departures from Paris to Narbonne and 13 to Perpignan. Most of these trips take between six and seven hours, but if you get the TGV (Trains à Grande Vitesse) from the Gare de Lyon you can be in Narbonne in half the time, saving yourself more than four hours. Note that at least 10 high-speed TGV per day leave Paris (Gare Montparnasse and Gare Austerlitz) for Toulouse; the journey time is more than five hours. A TGV line also serves Montpellier 18 times a day (departing from Paris's Gare de Lyon). The regional French rail network (TER) in the southwest provides regular service to many towns, though not all. Within the Midi-Pyrénées region, Toulouse is the biggest hub, with a major line linking Carcassonne (1 hr, €15), Béziers, Narbonne (1½ hrs, €21, change here for Perpignan), and Montpellier (2 hrs, €32); trains also link up with Albi (1 hr, €13), Foix (1 hr, €14), Ax-les-Thermes (2 hrs, €20), and Montauban (30 mins, €9); the latter connects with Moissac. Toulouse trains also connect with Biarritz (5 hrs, €45), Pau (3 hrs, €30), and Bordeaux (3 hrs, €35). Montpellier connects with Carcassonne (2 hr, €23), Perpignan (2 hrs, €25), Narbonne, and other towns. From Perpignan, take one of the dozen or so daily trains to Collioure (20 mins, €6).
