Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Cathedral Review

The largest church in northern Britain overlooks the city and the River Mersey. Built of local sandstone, the Gothic-style cathedral was begun in 1903 by architect Giles Gilbert Scott; it was finally finished in 1978. A custom-built theater shows "the Great Space," a 10-minute panoramic film on the history of the cathedral. The 331-foot-tall tower is a popular climb; two elevators and 108 steps take you to breathtaking views. From March to October you can book special "Twilight Tower" tickets, allowing you a spectacular view of sunset over the city, as seen from the top. Guided tours of the cathedral take place at 10 am, Monday to Saturday, and at noon on Sunday.
