Fodor's Review

In the heart of the village, this 15th- to 16th-century former wool merchant's house, which retains its beamed ceilings, Jacobean staircase, and Elizabethan fireplace, has four-poster beds in almost all of its rooms. The accommodations have creative themes such as the Medieval Garden, the Dovecote, and the Arabian Nights; one pricier option has a private pool. The adjoining restaurant serves simple but delicious dishes such as wild boar and local lamb.

Cardynham House Review

We stayed at this hotel over the weekend with a group of friends for a wedding. The room, if a bit chilly, and breakfast were lovely but sadly this was marred by the attitude and manner of the owners. We stayed in The Dovecote with our two children. When we arrived we were not warmly welcomed and were rushed through the introduction to our room. There was no comraderie and we certainly weren't invited to have a pleasant stay- not what you would

expect from a four star hotel. Our friends also said they had a similarly cool welcome. However it wasn't until the next day that the poor customer relations skills really became apparent. About 5 minutes after returning from lunch in the Bistro my husband answered the door to a lengthy tirade from the manager who, in front of our children, suggested that if we could not keep them under control we would be evicted. This was just 15 minues after another person in the Bistro had commented on how good the children were! We were extremely bemused and insulted and my daughter was quite anxious and unsure of what they were meant to have done. I believe she had been rushing after my friend's toddler to stop him from walking out of the hotel but they were in no way 'out of control'. His reaction and manner of confronting us was completely out of proportion to whatever the children were meant to have done. The next morning as my husband passed over the £250 for a two night stay he was given another row about complaints regarding noise in the pool room. After the wedding 8 of us were invited back, by the bride and groom, to this room for a night cap. We were talking and laughing and some people inevitably went in the pool. We were there for less than an hour and when we were asked to quiet down we did. Why my husband then had to be subjected to yet another lecture from the manager at the time he is paying him a substantial sum I don't know. It is very rare that we get to stay in a nice hotel and we had been really looking forward to having a relaxing couple of nights. Instead we were patronised and made to feel very unwelcome. It was well below how I would expect to be treated in a four star hotel with the room tariffs to match.

Good Atmosphere in a Charming Village

We recently stayed in the Tuscany Room for two nights. It certainly had the desired ambiance of a 500 year old room, but unfortunately that included very low light, which made reading impossible at night. The restaurant chef at the March Hare arrived two months ago and the dinner menu no longer features Thai food. The full English Breakfast is served by charming staff.
