Wilder Mann

Wilder Mann Review

"After a certain time all men become wild." So goes a famous Salzburg saying, perhaps coined after someone drank too much of the local "liquid bread"—Stiegl beer from the oldest private brewery in Austria. In fact, when this inn opened its doors in 1884 it became one of the most important burgher houses in the Altstadt. Today it offers a true time-stained ambience of an old Salzburg Gasthaus, right down to the wooden chairs next to a huge ceramic stove that generations of locals have sat on and the enormous plates of Bauernschmaus (farmer's dish) overflowing with veal, pork, sausage, sour cabbage, and dumplings.

The food is authentic Austrian, well-prepared, in huge portions.

This owner-operated Stubl is a terrific little find off Getreidegasse. The traditional, coutry-Austrian fare is hearty, tasty, and comes in ample portions. The Stiegl Brau tastes great.

The owner takes great pride in his establishment. You can tell he impresses the importance of good, friendly service on his staff. They made for a pleasant experience.

The eating area and restrooms were spotless. The "hunting lodge" atmosphere was very unique and fun.

The only downside is that smoking is allowed.
