Ferry Travel

Puerto Rico Ports Authority. The Puerto Rico Ports Authority runs passenger ferries from Fajardo to Culebra and Vieques. Service is from the ferry terminal in Fajardo, about 90 minutes' drive from San Juan. 787/494–0934; dtop.gov.pr/transporte_maritimo/index.asp. $2 per person from Fajardo to Vieques; $2.25 to Cuelbra. Children 3–11 and seniors 60–74 are $1. Passengers over 75 are free.

Car ferries also link Fajardo to Vieques and Culebra, but rental agencies won't let you take their vehicles between the mainland and islands. A municipal parking lot next to the ferry costs $5–$7 a day. No ferries link Vieques and Culebra at present.

There's limited seating, so arrive about an hour ahead of the departure time. The Ports Authority (DTOP) claims to take phone reservations daily from 8 to 11 and 1 to 3, but it's difficult to get anyone to answer this number. Reservations are not available for purchase online, either.

Fajardo Terminal. Schedules change often, and ferries are canceled frequently due to rough sea conditions. Call the Fajardo Terminal to confirm current schedules, and show up at least an hour before you intend to depart. 787/794–0934; www.dtop.gov.pr/transporte_maritimo/index.asp.
