Fodor's Expert Review Musée Schoelcher

Established in a Colonial-style building, Musée Schoelcher celebrates Victor Schoelcher, an abolitionist from Alsace who fought against slavery in the French West Indies in the 19th century. The first museum in Guadeloupe, it was inaugurated in 1887, following a substantial donation in 1883 by "himself." There are 17 ethnographic objects that are part of a collection assembled by the abolitionist during his travels in the Caribbean, Egypt, and Africa, between 1830 and 1847. Presently, the museum contains many of his personal effects, and exhibits trace his life and work.
