Fodor's Expert Review Te Puna Wai Lodge
24 Richardson St., Britannia Heights, Nelson, Nelson, 7010, New Zealand
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The views from this 1857 three-story Victorian villa are stunning, and there are luxurious marble bathrooms in all rooms. The Fifeshire Suite, on the top floor, might have the best views in Nelson, looking out over Tasman Bay, Haulashore Island, and the harbor. Downstairs the lounge and Haulashore Apartment have similar but less extensive views and their own garden and veranda entries. Haulashore also has a full, nicely designed kitchen. Tucked in at the back of the house downstairs is the Wakatu Room, with French doors opening to a tiny garden path. Congenial hosts Richard and James know all the good spots to eat and visit in Nelson, have an extensive collection of art and art books, and are fluent speakers in German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Danish.
PROS
- walking distance to three excellent waterfront restaurants
- complimentary spirits
CONS
- short steep driveway with flat park at the top
- steep staircase to the Fifeshire Suite makes it unsuitable for those with limited mobility
