Milford Road Review
The Milford Road, from Te Anau to Milford Sound, winds through deep valleys where waterfalls cascade into mossy beech forests. It's a spectacular route, but if you're making the trip between May and November, check local information for avalanche warnings (snow and trees) and come equipped with tire chains, which you can rent in any Te Anau service station. The road is narrow and winding at times, so allow at least 2½ hours.
The 120-km (75-mi) road starts with a fast 29-km (18-mi) stretch along the shores of Lake Te Anau to Te Anau Downs. This is where the ferry leaves for those wishing to hike the Milford Track. Past Te Anau Downs, the road cuts away from the lake and after 20 km (12½ mi) enters Fiordland National Park. You'll pass some great photo ops at Mirror Lakes, Knobs Flat, and Lake Gunn before reaching the Divide, a watershed between rivers flowing both east and west and the starting point for the Routeburn Track. You can stop at Monkey Creek to fill your water bottles up with fresh spring water. A few miles farther on, you'll come to the Homer Tunnel. After the lengthy tunnel, the road descends sharply in hairpin turns down the Cleddau Valley for 16 km (10 mi) before reaching the small settlement at Milford Sound.
Note: In 2008, Te Anau police expressed dismay at the high number of fatalities and injuries caused by head-on car crashes on this road. Most of these incidents are caused by overseas drivers driving recklessly or inattentively. Please be careful on this road, pay attention, and slow down!
