Tours

Ocean Leopard Tours. Explore the drama of the volcanic coastline from the comfort of this sleek craft purpose-built for the task at hand. As a boy, skipper Jason came to Coromandel every year for family holidays. Now, after sailing international superyachts, he's returned to settle in the area and just loves to share his old holiday haunts with visitors. Justin's boat is also covered—great to keep the rain and sun at bay without spoiling the amazing views. The sturdy little craft can get right up close against towering sea cliffs, blowholes, and even into sea caves. Trips leave from both Whitianga Wharf and Ferry Landing (on the Cooks Beach side of the estuary). Excursions include "The Full Monty" (two hours), with options to add a snorkeling component or, by request only, "The Whirlwind Tour" (one hour). Bookings, available online, are essential in summer. 0800/843–8687; www.oceanleopardtours.co.nz. From NZ$60.

Sea Cave Adventures. This company uses a smaller boat that can get you into the sea caves and blowholes (weather and tide dependent) as well as showcase all the sheer volcanic coastal cliffs and white-sand beaches. The skipper knows the best spots and you can shelter from the sun under the boat’s awning. Two-hour trips leave from Whitianga Wharf at 8, 11, 2, and 4:30 (other times by request). Reservations recommended. Whitianga Wharf, Whitianga, Waikato, 3510. 0800/80--6060; www.whitianga-adventures.co.nz. From NZ$75.
