Visitor Information

The Department of Conservation Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre is open daily. The Environment Centre, located next to the Glowing Sky Merino Shop, has information about the habitat recovery projects on the island. The village library in the Community Centre has a complete collection of books about Stewart Island, as well as field guides of native flora and fauna. (The library is open only five hours per week, however.) For biased, vulgar, and amusing information about island goings-on ("the goss"), belly up to the bar at the pub and do some earwigging.
