Inside and Out in Otago, Invercargill, and Stewart Island

This region has plenty of indoor and outdoor options. If your temperament or the weather (which can sometimes be rather frightful in this neck of the country) are telling you to stay inside, stick around Dunedin for museums, galleries, cafés, and all the amenities that a city furnishes. But if you're game for exploring the natural world, venture onto the Otago Peninsula or further to the Catlins; these can be a day trip from Dunedin. If you're truly feeling adventurous and ready to leave all urban comforts behind, take a few days and head down to Stewart Island.
