Getting Here and Around

The Waikato Expressway, now the main State Highway 1 route south from Auckland, opened in late 2015 and bypasses Cambridge. But the beautiful town is well worth a stopover, so exit the Expressway at the Cambridge signs, or travel on State Highway 1B (which avoids Hamilton city and is clearly signposted from Taupiri); Cambridge is an easy two-hour drive from Auckland and 20 minutes from Hamilton. Continuing south, Rotorua is a one-hour drive, while Taupo is 90 minutes away. InterCity coach services connect daily from these cities and towns.

If you're arriving by air, Hamilton Airport (HLZ) is 14 km (9 miles) northwest of Cambridge. Air New Zealand offers daily direct flights from Wellington, Palmerston North, and Christchurch, with connecting flights to most domestic destinations. You can rent a car at the airport; a shuttle will also take you into Cambridge for about NZ$48. The best way to explore the town itself is to visit the Village Square, i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, and historic Town Hall, before strolling down to Victoria, Empire, and Commerce streets.
