Fodor's New Zealand
HUHU Cafe Review
Locals know a good thing and smile quietly when visitors inevitably express surprise that such an urban-chic café exists "way out here in the country." (The moniker café doesn't do justice.) Big windows provide great views of the countryside outside, while owner/chef Andy showcases New Zealand and local food inside. His Te Kuiti slow-cooked lamb shoulder has won national acclaim. The same contemporary New Zealand–style menu runs from lunch through dinner, with a mix of smaller and larger plates that stay under NZ$30. Traditional Māori bread is usually featured. Top New Zealand wines plus craft beers from throughout the North Island are available. Downstairs the HUHU Gallery showcases classy New Zealand giftware, ceramics, and jewelry.
