Rutland Arms Review

With reproduction Victorian furniture and lots of mahogany, this renovated Edwardian inn in the center of Wanganui is a top choice if elegance and character are your wish. Four suites have whirlpool baths, including the special-occasion (think honeymoon) Captain Laye Suite, which has a double whirlpool. Downstairs, the restaurant–bar ($$–$$$) has traditional English character with a Kiwi twist: a cozy roaring fire (in winter), lots of delightful old Wanganui pictures on the walls, a wide choice of imported beers, and more than 50 single-malt whiskies. You can eat here or in the quiet, sunny courtyard. Food is generous, contemporary New Zealand–style cuisine, and while the menu changes regularly, lamb shanks, liver-and-bacon, and fish-and-chips remain perennial favorites.
