The arrival is exceptional—first by river (jet boat or kayak) and then by the eponymous Flying Fox, a simple aerial cable car that deposits you high above the west bank of the Whanganui River, where there are a pair of cottages (each sleeping two to four) and the romantic Glory Cart gypsy caravan hideaway. This place is distinctly eco-friendly, from construction with recycled materials to facilities, such as wood- and gas-fired showers, solar lighting, and outdoor clawfoot tub. Inside, accommodations are warmly comfortable, with rug-covered brick floors, tie-dye throws, carved screens, and wood-burning stoves. The entire property is certified organic. Bed and breakfast is available, and other meals can be provided (ask in advance). Or bring your own groceries for lunch and dinner, perhaps with with some home-grown organic produce available. A little store carries a handful of interesting products. You can get here from Wanganui on the Whanganui River Road Mail Tour; for those who are driving, there's secure parking on the road side of the river.
