Great Barrier Reef Sights

Airlie Beach Lagoon

Updated 01/16/2014

Fodor's Review

This stinger-free swimming enclosure on Airlie's shorefront has dedicated lap-swimming lanes, real-sand "beaches," two adjoining children's pools, and sensor-activated lighting after dark. There are toilets, showers, and change rooms nearby, and all pools are patrolled bytrained lifeguards year-round. A tropical garden, crisscrossed with walkways and dotted with public art, picnic tables, and free electric BBQs, surround the lagoon, and there's a playground for the kids.

Not surprisingly, it's hugely popular with locals and visitors, especially in stinger season. Amenities: food and drink; lifeguards; toilets; showers. Best for: swimming.
