Fodor's Expert Review Ashcrofts

$$$ Blackheath Modern Australian

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Amid the antiques and vintage shops of Blackheath village, this acclaimed restaurant looks a little like a Parisian bistro, although the black-and-white photographs on the wall are of prominent Australians. Sydneysiders and locals turn up for Sunday lunch or dinner to feast on the six-course (A$90) tasting menu, although you can also order à la carte. You might start with a spring salad of honey-baked beetroot, house-made labneh, candied walnuts with tea-soaked muscats, and hibiscus vinaigrette, or the Egyptian-spice quail on Cape Malay carrot remoulade with sticky-eggplant jam. Mains include fish pie with wild sea scallops, tiger prawns, and fennel-infused snapper velouté, and slow-roasted crispy-skin duck with Persian aromatics and citrus flavors.
