Fodor's Expert Review JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort and Spa

An Thoi Ward, Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

This grandiose beachfront resort, designed to look like a fictional French university from the 1890s, is a true flight of fancy filled with more than 5,000 European antiques and imaginative objets d'art, not to mention expansive villas. Various wings are named after academic departments, such as the Department of Agriculture, and every room within has a horticultural theme. Guests can relax at any of three public pools (or their own private pool if staying in a villa), on the pristine private white sand beach or at the resort's cocktail bar. There's a kids club to keep ages 4 to 12 entertained while adults take classes or visit the spa.

PROS

  • villas have private pools
  • private white sand beach
  • beautiful backdrops

CONS

  • expensive
  • sprawling layout makes for long walks between facilities
  • the interior design can feel over the top
