Fodor's Expert Review Rex Hotel
141 Nguyen Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
If it's history you're after, the Rex has it in spades: it played a major role in the Vietnam War, hosting the American Information Service's daily "five o'clock follies" press briefings, and the 1976 unification of North and South Vietnam was announced in the same room. Nowadays it's an upscale and slightly kitsch state-run hotel that has a uniquely quirky charm. Even if you don't stay here, stop by for a drink at the rooftop bar, with its view of downtown, decorative lights, and the "five o'clock follies" cocktail containing Bacardi, cucumber, and lemon.
PROS
- a great sense of history
- friendly and helpful staff
- central location
CONS
- like most five-star hotels, food and beverage prices can be extortionate
