Urauchi-gawa Cruises. If you go with your guide at Shimamariashibi, take one of the boat tours up Iriomote's Amazon. The river is the sole reason many day-trippers come to the island, with boats navigating excitingly up the broad, coffee-colored water through mangroves and ferns to an impressive waterfall, all for ¥1,500. Allow three hours for the round-trip. Kayak rentals can also be negotiated from the boat operators if you want to go it yourself. The first boats depart at 9 am and the last depart at 4 pm. Since this is the most popular activity for visitors to Iriomote-jima, you'll find plenty of boats as well as frequent buses to Urauchibashi, the mouth of the river, if you arrive at Uehara port in the early part of the day.
