Directly across from Nijo Castle, this chain hotel's location is dynamite. You're close to the shopping districts, but won't be overwhelmed by constant crowds. If you can get a room facing the castle rather than a gray high-rise, your view will be sensational. The nightly summer beer garden on the rooftop is one of the most popular in the city because of the spectacular 360-degree view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

We had our choice of two different types of rooms: smoking which reeked of cigarette smoke, and non-smoking which reeked of mildew. after bouncing between several rooms for 2 nights, we bailed out of the ANA entirely. And we paid 20,000 Yen per night for the privilege. Even by Japanese standards the rooms are small, poorly decorated, and rather frowzy.
