Safety

Violent crime is rare in Bali’s tourist areas. The most frequent nuisances are pickpockets, bag snatchings, and slashing knapsacks and bags for valuables. If you are attacked or feel threatened, shout "Toe-long!" (Help!) or "Pen-choori!" (Thief!), or enter the closest public building for assistance. Scams, thefts, and sexual assaults occur even in temples, so be on guard. Visitors have reported occasionally having drinks drugged in Kuta nightspots, then waking up in their rooms having been robbed; use safes. Drug sentences for foreigners are draconian, so just say no.
