Fodor's Expert Review Marari Beach Resort

Pollathai P.O., Mararikulam, Kerala, 688549, India

This 25-acre eco-friendly resort, built to resemble a traditional fishing village, offers a private and unspoiled palm-fringed beach, an excellent ayurvedic center, and easy access to the backwaters that Alleppey is most known for. Brick paths lead through rows of deceptively modest thatched-roof cottages that are both extremely spacious and comfortable—they have traditional red oxide floors, coir matting, bamboo roll blinds, cane furniture, and hand-loomed furnishings, with open-air bathrooms sporting banana trees.

PROS

  • luxury villas have their own pools
  • friendly and professional staff
  • on-site naturalist leads tours of the grounds and its butterfly garden

CONS

  • no TVs
  • beach is closed during monsoons
  • expensive during peak season
