Lanzerac Manor Review

The sense of history is almost tangible at this large working wine estate dating from 1692. The sheer beauty of the setting has not changed: a classic Cape Dutch manor house flanked by the rolling vineyards and mountains of the Jonkershoek Valley. The staff at this luxurious hotel and winery are friendly, and guest rooms are individually decorated with plush carpets, heavy drapes, and antiques. Some rooms have a floral theme; others are more masculine with animal-print cushions and bold stripes. You can eat casual alfresco meals on the terrace (weather permitting; $$) or opt for fine dining at Governor's Hall ($$), where chef Stephen Fraser pulls out all the stops. Start your meal off with the "cappuccino" of porcini with white-truffle sauce and mushroom "biscotti." Main courses include Indian lamb curry and Karoo ostrich with fried banana, sweet potato, and other root vegetables. The legendary Lanzerac cheesecake is creamy, tangy, and utterly sublime.
