Fodor's Review

At the top of the Helshoogte Pass with absolutely amazing views of the valley and mountains, Tokara is definitely a Winelands must-do. Chef Etienne Bonthuys is the acknowledged king of sauces—rich, slow reductions that you may be tempted to lick off your plate. His adventurous menu changes seasonally but could include such starters as chilled avocado soup with smoked salmon or warm oysters in a Cap Classique butter sauce (aah, therein lies his magic). For mains there

are some unusual combinations that work brilliantly, such as grilled springbok served with a lobster sauce and mint oil, and the ostrich fillet accompanied by a mandarin-liqueur sauce and berries. The fantastic two-course kids' menu (R55) doesn't list greasy fried chicken and fries, but rather meals such as mini steak burgers, calamari-and-prawn kebabs with pasta, or grilled fish-and-chips. For added interest there's an art gallery, an olive oil cellar, and free wine and olive oil tastings.
