Lake Nakuru
If it's birds and flamingos you're after, then Lake Nakuru, 230 km (143 mi) northwest of Nairobi, hits the spot. You will find millions—yes, millions—of these engaging birds to gaze upon. From the air, and even when you see them from far off, the flamingos color the lake bright pink. There are also more than 400 other bird species here, plus incredible game including leopard, the endangered black rhino, and lots of plains game. The lake is in Lake Nakuru National Park, which you can drive around it in a few hours. The main road, which circles the lake, has the best game viewing. If you'd like to do an overnight, Lake Nakuru Lodge (www.lakenakurulodge.com) and Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge (www.sarovahotels.com) are both on the lake.
