Fodor's Expert Review Motswiri Camp

Selinda Reserve, North West, Botswana

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

If you are looking for a more active safari wrapped up in some good, old-fashioned hospitality, then you’ll love this camp, operated by Ride and Walk Botswana. Activities are focused on two and four legs although drives, mokoros, and boats (water permitting) are also available. Raised guest tents with private decks are set alongside a functional dining area and cozy lounge, arranged in a V and overlooking a sunken beach where tasty meals are served by the seasonal Selinda Spillway. The camp may lack the bells and whistles of its salubrious counterparts but there is a fun vibe emanating from the experienced guides and reciprocated by the guests, many of whom return for stays of seven days or more. Pick termitomyces mushrooms (think bush truffles) to accompany dinner or ride within meters of wild dogs, elephants, and buffalos—you might even spot the elusive pangolin. A nearby fly camp, available at a supplementary cost, is accessible by foot, boat (in season), or on horseback and it offers a rustic change of scenery.

PROS

  • lots of laughter
  • limitless range of different walks and rides
  • can cater to wheelchair-bound guests

CONS

  • rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious
  • focus is not on big game
  • riders must be experienced
