Most motorsport competitions are male-dominated venues primarily concerned with who can most efficiently put the pedal to the metal. But one rally race takes a different approach. The women-only Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc, now in its 27th year, is an off-roading adventure that values ingenuity and determination over speedometer pushing.
Teams of amateur and professional “Gazelles” are given a map, a compass, and the geographic coordinates of their checkpoints. Without GPS, teams navigate off-road across the Moroccan desert in 4x4s, crossovers, ATVs, trucks, or motorbikes with the goal of reaching those checkpoints by traveling the shortest distance possible. No easy feat considering the remote, dune-laden landscape facing the competitors.
The adventure begins March 27 and officially concludes April 2.
