Fodor's Expert Review Arpoador Inn

Rua Francisco Otaviano 177, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 22080–040, Brazil

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This pocket-size hotel is functional rather than luxurious, but it benefits from one of the best beachfront locations in the city at Arpoador, the point at which Ipanema meets Copacabana. A pedestrianized street allows direct access to the beach, and at sunset the views are incredible. Take a stroll along the landmark rock that juts out into the ocean at the end of the beach to see a dazzling show as the sun dips over the ocean. The spectacle is visible from the hotel's back (deluxe) rooms that face Arpoador Beach. (Avoid the front rooms, which can be noisy.) There's a view over the beach from the breakfast room, where an ample buffet spread includes fresh tropical fruit and juices. Decor is simple, in white and gray tones, and some fixtures are past their prime, but the hotel is popular with surfers and other outdoorsy types who appreciate the accessible (by Rio standards) pricing. Some rooms are much larger than others, so ask about room size when you book.
