Much like Trujillo, Chiclayo and Lambayeque offer seco de cabrito, causas, and tortilla de raya (skate omelet). The area is more famous for King Kong, a large, crispy pastry that was invented around the time that the original movie premiered. It features manjar blanco, a sweet filling made of sugar, condensed milk, and cinnamon boiled down until it's thick and chewy.

A friendly staff serves a wide range of Peruvian and international specialties at this centrally located eatery open daily from 8 am to 11 pm. Pollo a la brasa, sandwiches, grilled meats, arroz con pato: it's all here. There's also an excellent breakfast menu, free Wi-Fi, big corner windows for people-watching, and facilities for big family parties. Prices may have crept up in recent years, but if you're looking for an eatery with something for everyone, this place is unbeatable.

Vichayo Restobar

Airy modernist digs with bamboo accents set the backdrop at this chic Chiclayo lunch spot, but the show's star is the terrific fusion cuisine. Cebiches and tortilla de raya are the most requested dishes, but the chef's own creations are no less worthy. Best bets: necorococó, a fish fillet topped with a fragrant stewlike salsa; and a quartet of causas made with smoked salmon, shrimp, passion fruit, and octopus.
