A five-minute walk from the center of town takes you to this stunning eco-lodge, part of the Relais & Châteaux collection of hotels, made up of rustic-yet-elegant bungalows with exposed beams and cathedral ceilings, set in a minitropical cloud forest. There are 372 varieties of orchids and 18 species of hummingbirds on the grounds, and lodging prices include several excursion possibilities such as bird-watching and orchid tours. Others are available at additional cost, such as a visit to the Spectacled Bear project. It's worth upgrading to a suite to take advantage of a private terrace and Jacuzzi. There are special services available for families, including kid-friendly guides. The restaurant overlooking the surrounding hills is also first-rate.

  • Natural setting with many activities, some included in the price
  • Excellent restaurant with breakfast and dinner included
  • Children under 12 stay free

Cons

Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu

$$$ | Av. Imperio de Los Incas E-34, Aguas Calientes, Peru

Although the feel may be a bit more business than boutique, this is unquestionably the best bet for those wanting a comfortable, modern room and excellent service without a hefty price tag. The availability of adjoining rooms makes this hotel especially attractive for families. Note that the standard-category rooms are completely interior, and traditional rooms are on the side of the train tracks. Superior rooms and junior suites are on the side of the river and therefore the best choice. You'll receive a 25% discount by booking directly on the hotel's website.

Pros

  • Comfortable modern rooms
  • Friendly and attentive staff
  • Adjoining rooms available

Cons

  • Standard-category rooms are interior rooms
  • Traditional rooms are near the train tracks
  • Minimal design and few frills
