Second Home Peru

$$$ | Cl. Domeyer 366, Lima, 04, Peru Fodor's Choice

This 100-year-old Tudor-style house on a cliff overlooking the sea and surrounded by a sculpture garden is one of Lima's loveliest lodgings. The sometime home and gallery of sculptor and painter Victor Delfín is a feast for the eyes, packed with art and backed by a sweeping ocean view. Guest rooms on the second floor are tastefully simple, with hardwood floors, high ceilings, and lots of white; rooms 2 and 3 look out onto the Pacific. There are also three oceanfront rooms built into the cliff with gorgeous vistas, though noise from the road below could be a problem for light sleepers. The owner, Lilian Delfín, can help with travel arrangements and other needs.

Pros

  • Gorgeous cliff-side setting
  • Home of sculptor Victor Delfín
  • Oceanfront rooms with jaw-dropping views

Cons

  • Limited guest services
  • No restaurant
  • No air-conditioning

Villa Barranco

$$$ | Cl. Carlos Zegarra 274, Lima, 04, Peru Fodor's Choice

Staying in this meticulously restored 1920s mansion on a quiet street near Barranco's malecón is a bit like staying with old friends, thanks to the laid-back atmosphere and helpful staff. The stately, two-story house is hemmed by gardens, with terraces, decks, and a tower from which to admire the surroundings. A second-floor deck with a small bar affords a lovely view of the Pacific, framed by palm trees. As for the rooms, they have high ceilings and plenty of windows, with pine floors, antiques, and an eclectic mix of art; the best have bright, spacious bathrooms with freestanding tubs. The house is a short walk from the center of Barranco and most restaurants, but the staff will fix you a meal if you prefer to stay in.

Pros

  • Gorgeous historic home
  • Ocean views
  • Friendly, helpful staff

Cons

  • Some rooms have small bathrooms
  • Breakfast is a bit skimpy
  • Some areas not well ventilated

Hotel B

$$$$ | Av. San Martín 301, Lima, 04, Peru

Also known as Arts Boutique Hotel B, this lodging-cum-art gallery in a refurbished, turn-of-the-century mansion is a feast for the senses, with its 1920s charm, rooftop deck, impeccable service, and impressive collection of works by up-and-coming Latin American artists. Located on a street known for its republican-era architecture, the 17-room casona charms you into believing you're staying in the home of a wealthy art collector. Rooms in the main house are gorgeous, with high ceilings and hardwood floors, while several "Atelier" suites have private balconies and porcelain bathtubs. Light sleepers, however, may prefer a room in the new annex, which is better insulated from street noise. Free breakfast and complimentary afternoon tea are served in the library and adjacent terrace. Locals and guests flock to the bar-restaurant at night to enjoy the selection of Peruvian and Mediterranean dishes.

Pros

  • Contemporary art collection
  • Excellent service
  • Complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea

Cons

  • One of Barranco's priciest lodgings
  • Frequently noisy
  • Room quality is uneven
