Casa San Agustín

$$$$ | Calle de la Universidad, No. 36--44, Cartagena, Colombia Fodor's Choice
Casa San Agustín, Cartagena
Josh Gibson

This intimate and luxurious boutique's distinctive rooms are scattered throughout the white-washed, beautifully decorated former residence in Cartagena's UNESCO-protected Old Town, separated by flower-filled terraces and cozy, book-lined lounges. Because of the setup, each room has a different layout and view (street or garden); some have shared gardens, private plunge pools, or original elements like wood-beamed ceilings or frescoes, while a couple suites are duplexes. All come with free Wi-Fi, Frette linens, Ortigia bath products, HDTVs, and on-request iPads. A small swimming pool beckons in the main courtyard below an ancient aqueduct, as do a few white couch-lined nooks for alfresco refreshments. Staff are professional and genuinely caring, making visitors feel at home, avoiding airs and graces that can so often mar similarly establishments. Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, the Alma restaurant highlights local seafood. Along with the sexy vibe and relaxed-luxury style, the hotel's biggest plus is the central location in the vibrant Old Town.

Pros

  • Stylishly integration of the historical structure and chic modern design
  • World-class staff
  • Ideal Old Town location

Cons

  • No on-site gym
  • At capacity, public spaces like the pool and balcony can feel crowded
  • The live band in the patio on weekends may be a bit noisy for some

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena

$$$$ | Calle del Torno 39--29, Cartagena, 130001, Colombia Fodor's Choice
Sofitel Cartagena Santa Clara, Cartagena
Courtesy of the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena Hotel

The magnificent Santa Clara—a former 17th-century monastery—deserves its position in Sofitel's Legends category, reserved for properties with true historic status. Beautiful arched walkways, atmospheric plant-filled courtyards, and original details from confessionals to water wells abound, adding character and making the place more romantic than its Clarist nun founders could ever have intended. Guest rooms are spread out over an original Colonial wing and a more modern Republican one; all have Caribbean views, wood ceilings and floors, and elegant, muted contemporary decor, plus all the expected upscale technology and amenities. The nuns' former dining room is now the highly rated Restaurante1621, featuring superb French fare fused with New World ingredients and an outstanding wine list. A pool and vast terrace help the place feel like a resort in spite of its central location, while the So Spa has a hammam and locally influenced treatments.

Pros

  • Unique historic setting and ambience
  • Excellent wine bar with arguably the city's best cellar
  • Biggest swimming pool in Old Town with views to the ocean at the raised far end

Cons

  • More of a traditional hotel experience than the small boutique inns of Old Town
  • Occasionally conferences or large groups dominate the hotel
  • Pool area can get a bit noisy

Aité

$$$ | Colombia Fodor's Choice
Bungalows dot the beach between arching coco palms while the main house, open-air lounge, and restaurant perch on a hill taking in expansive views of the surrounding forest and wave-swept beach---this is the scene at Aité. The well-constructed bungalows maintain a cool atmosphere with ceiling fans that help keep the oppressive heat at bay and screened sliding doors that allow fresh air in, but keep invading insects out. The beds are welcoming yet firm and oversized pillows add luxury, while details like a shower with beach views and a deck hung with hammocks make the bungalows a perfect setting for a relaxing beach holiday. The hotel is enchanting at night, as starlike solar lights create pathways between the main house and the bungalows.

Pros

  • A genuine attempt has been made to reduce the hotels ecological impact
  • A swimming pool at the main house and one below
  • Excellent restaurant with killer views

Cons

  • Service seems limited to the main house
  • No a/c
  • Wi-Fi is best at the main house

Bogotá Bed and Breakfast Inn

$$ | Calle 34 No. 17–01, Bogotá, 11001, Colombia Fodor's Choice
It takes just moments for this 1900s manor to feel like home, and for owners Beatriz and Rick to feel like family. Beautifully restored over the span of two years, the mansion has been completely renovated to levels seen in top luxury hotels. Double-paned room windows eliminate traffic noise; heavy, sound-insulating wooden doors were hand-carved; and the hydromassage showers are piping hot. Room design is simple, but each room is unique and furnished with locally collected antiques. The made-to-order breakfasts are superb, with tasty local flavors and Rick’s signature French toast. It is, however, the hosts' openhearted willingness to help with any details of your trip, be it restaurant recommendations or assistance with onward travel, that sets this apart as one of the best places to stay in Bogotá.

Pros

  • Warm hospitality with excellent local knowledge
  • High-speed Wi-Fi and international cable TV
  • Espresso machine, filtered water, and fresh local fruit available at all times

Cons

  • Low-key, historic residential area might be too quiet for some

$$$$ | Calle del Guerrero #29--108, Cartagena, 130001, Colombia Fodor's Choice
Less than a block away from the central Plaza de la Trinidad, Casa Lola is leading the way in accommodations for the booming Getsemaní neighborhood. The soothing modern interior is impeccably fitted into a finely restored historic building. Rooms are uniquely laid out and decorated with a brashly modern flair by Spanish owner and interior designer Ignacio Garcia de Vinuesa that ensures you'll fall for the space regardless of your personal taste.

The Charlee

$$$$ | Calle 9A #37–16, Medellín, Colombia Fodor's Choice
Since opening in 2011, The Charlee has set the tone for upmarket hotels in Medellín, and remains among the best urban boutique hotels in the country. The style is modern and art-centric, starting in the reception area with a wall clad in antique trunks, various oversized contemporary paintings, and red, octopuslike chandeliers. Surfaces throughout are a combination of polished cement and scarred wood with antique-chic furnishings in the common areas and low ambient lighting. Rooms are decorated in clean white and beige tones, with a frosted-glass cube housing the spacious bathroom and luxurious shower. Each room has a greenery-edged balcony over looking the park—some even have a Jacuzzi—but along with the view, the noise of the city's most vibrant party area is unavoidable.

Pros

  • Gym and wellness center spread over the top three floors is arguably the city's best
  • Excellent Italian restaurant
  • Top-notch staff and concierge to guide you to the best of Medellín

Cons

Click Clack Hotel

$$$ | Carrera 11, No. 93--77, Bogotá, Colombia Fodor's Choice
An edgy design and playfully artistic ambience puts Click Clack at the head of the urban boutique-hotel pack. Impressive even from a distance, the 11-story building is wrapped in mesh depicting a street map of Bogotá, but it's the smaller details that close the deal. Sleek-lined furnishings are softened by quality room art, the dark-tiled rain shower is pure luxury, and the minibar is stocked with an interesting selection of local goods, which are included in the room price. Some rooms look onto a multiple-story vertical garden, while others have a small terrace or floor-to-ceiling windows that offer expansive city views, but all avoid feeling cramped. The top-floor bar, Apache, draws a good crowd and serves up quality burgers and drinks. 100 Gramos restaurant, occupying the lower ground floor, is the hotel’s most impressively designed space and has an excellent, modern menu of tapas-inspired dishes.

Pros

  • Great breakfast
  • Convenient location near Parque la 93
  • Entertaining, whimsical design throughout

Cons

  • Noise from the street and the rooftop bar can be an issue
  • Friendly staff lacks professional polish
  • Dark, low-lit corridors are uncomfortable

Finca Barlovento

$$$$ | Colombia Fodor's Choice
Perched on 10-foot-high rocks above Naranjos beach, with the Piedra River rolling past to meet the sea, this is the beach house of your dreams. There are two further lodges, with river-facing rooms that are more spacious and serene, and have en suite bathrooms and air-conditioning. Delicious, varied meals are among the best along the coast and are served at a communal table, creating an intimate, familiar atmosphere. Finca La Jorará

$$$ | 470017, Colombia Fodor's Choice
A working organic farm that stretches from the coast into the hills, La Jorará offers an unbeatable experience---picture a fresh mountain stream running down from the hills to the wild, deserted beach that's bordered by lush trees that hang heavy with fruit. Spread over three lodges, the accommodations have a farm-style rusticity that integrates with the lush surrounding gardens. There's plenty to do during the day: climb up to breathtaking lookout points; splash in the river's natural pools; or take a tour of the banana plantation. Four Seasons Casa Medina

$$$$ | Carrera 7, No. 69A–22, Bogotá, Colombia Fodor's Choice
Casa Medina opened in 2015 and donned the mantle of reigning royalty in Bogotá’s hotel scene. An audacious restoration and building project left the 1946 mansion renewed and added a new wing that seamlessly integrates with the original structure. Throughout the property there are details to savor: stone columns rescued from colonial-era convents, sweeping staircases, dark wood ceiling beams, and intricately carved doors unique to each room. Public spaces, like the stone, ivy-covered courtyard next to the restaurant, are inviting. Guest rooms have handcrafted furnishings that ooze old-world class, like aged-leather sofas that beg for lounging, and working fireplaces (in some rooms) that can be lit at your request. Bathrooms are resplendent in ocher or dark marble, with a rain shower and L'Occitane products. À la carte breakfast is served in a glass atrium with modern design touches---Edison bulbs and steel roof girders---and every item is perfectly prepared. The on-site restaurant, Castanyoles, has some of the best Spanish food in the city, and the spa offers some innovative local treatments that feature coffee and coconut.

  • Location in the heart of Zona G
  • Professional, English-speaking staff

If you are looking to stay on outlying Isla Barú, this beautiful beachside home turned intimate B&B run by friendly host Olga is a perfect getaway tucked into a quiet corner of the island. The white-painted rooms are cool and spacious, open to the elements beyond the flowing white curtains, and though simple, have real rustic heart. There's no a/c, but a fan takes the edge off the heat. The shady beach, although not perfect white sand with crystal clear water, remains empty most of the day, and the calm waters are good for swimming. The hosts will happily help organize snorkeling trips to the Islas del Rosario or a visit to nearby Aviario de Colombia, the country's best and newest bird sanctuary, with some 135 species. Alfiz Hotel

$$$$ | Calle Cochera del Gobernador #33--28, Cartagena, 130001, Colombia
Airy public areas blending whitewashed walls and exposed original brickwork with a lush green minigarden in the middle are perfectly in tune with this ancient city’s style. The cool interiors of guest rooms, which are impeccably furnished with dark-wood antiques, complete the glance into the way the wealthy lived in Cartagena in colonial times. The building, lovingly restored over two years, is typical of early traders' homes, with the high-ceilinged first floor used for warehousing and the second floor as living quarters. Each of the eight rooms is carefully decorated to tell the story of a different era in the city's history, and many details, including the oversized brass showerheads and elaborate woodwork, were crafted by local artisans. The walls are well over a foot thick, keeping rooms cool and insulated from all but the most gentle reminders of salsa from the party in the streets outside.

Casa de Isabella

$$$ | Cra. 2 #19–20, Santa Marta, 470004, Colombia
A block away from El Parque de los Novios, a focal point of Santa Marta's nightlife, this small boutique hotel has a cheerful design and plenty of greenery in the courtyard that adds a calming element to the space. After renovations in mid-2016, the hotel feels updated and renewed, notably in the well-decorated guests rooms, with dark, hand-carved furnishings, exposed ceiling beams, and touches of bright Caribbean color in cushions or wall hangings. Rooms are also equipped with free Wi-Fi and Apple TV. Another bonus: there's a pleasant terrace with a splash pool to take the edge off the heat.

Pros

  • Convenient location near restaurants and beachfront
  • Wonderful personal service
  • Suites are particularly luxurious

Cons

  • Basic rooms are on the small side

Casa India Catalina

$$ | Calle del Coliseo #5--67, Cartagena, 130001, Colombia
This is a solid choice for the budget-conscious traveler looking to stay right in the heart of the historic center with all the sights and nightlife close at hand. The basic hotel retains plenty of colonial character from the bougainvillea-covered entrance to the cheerful yellow interior and balconies with wooden balustrades overlooking a small pool surrounded by exposed brick arches. Rooms are colorful and clean, although they could do with a touch of maintenance and upgraded towels, but they have basic showers, a/c, and cable TV. Avoid streetside rooms if you're a light sleeper.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Basic but good included breakfast

Cons

  • Wi-Fi signal patchy in some rooms
  • Street noise is an issue
  • Some rooms have no windows
