The city of Laguna is the second-oldest Portuguese settlement in the state of Santa Catarina. Most downtown buildings reflect the early colonial days. Known for its many beaches, Laguna has one of the liveliest Carnival festivities of southern Brazil. Part of the city faces Laguna Imaruí (Imaruí Lagoon), which connects to the Atlantic 5 km (3 miles) farther east.
