53 Best Hotels in The South, Brazil

Background Illustration for Hotels

The South has a great variety of hotels and inns. Except for in the smallest towns and most remote areas, however, you shouldn't have a problem finding comfortable accommodations. Pousadas in historic buildings are common, particularly in beach towns. Hotel-fazendas (farmhouse hotels) are popular in rural areas. Southern beaches attract many South American tourists, and seaside cities might become crowded and highway traffic nightmarish from December through March. Make advance reservations.

Costão do Santinho Resort

$$$$ | Rua Ver. Onildo Lemos 2505, Florianópolis, 88001-970, Brazil Fodor's Choice

The ocean view from the north-facing rooms is one reason to stay at the island's most sophisticated resort; the surrounding 100-acre Atlantic Forest is another. There are several nearby trails, including one that leads to petroglyphs on the hill. The older buildings have full apartments with mini kitchens that are perfect for longer stays. A more recent addition features traditional hotel rooms with modern decor. All have great ocean views. The list of activities here is almost unending: martial arts, aerobics, surfing, sandboarding (like snowboarding, but on sand), and trekking.

Pros

  • Many amenities
  • Large and comfortable rooms

Cons

  • Hectic when hosting conventions
  • Service not as attentive in high season
  • 3-day minimum stay

Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel

$$$$ | Rodovia das Cataratas, Km 32, Foz do Iguaçu, 85853-000, Brazil Fodor's Choice

Not only is this stately hotel in the national park, with views of the smaller falls from the front-side suites, but it also provides the traditional comforts of a colonial-style establishment: large rooms, terraces, vintage furniture, and hammocks. The main building, surrounded by verandas and gardens, is almost 100 years old and is a national historic monument. Although the rooms are comfortable, it's the setting and atmosphere that you pay for—the chance to wander the paths to the falls before and after the hordes of day visitors arrive is priceless. The traditional Brazilian Itaipú restaurant and the Ipê grill near the pool offer all-you-can-eat barbecue and salad buffets.

Pros

  • Right inside the park, a short walk from the falls
  • Serious colonial-style charm
  • Friendly, helpful staff

Cons

  • Rooms aren't as luxurious as the price promises
  • Far from Foz do Iguaçu so you're limited to the on-site restaurants
  • Only the most expensive suites have views of the falls

Felissimo Exclusive Hotel

$$$$ | Rua Ales Blaun 201, Balneário Camboriú, 88331-430, Brazil
What started as an upmarket guesthouse in a quiet, residential suburb is now a self-styled “exclusive hotel,” with a vibe that's design-conscious and hip. Expanses of white walls, glass, and wood give a minimalist feel to each of the 10 rooms, all of varying sizes. An excellent bistro ($$$$), with artfully mismatched furniture and lanterns in the trees, is at the heart of the space, and draws a young, well-dressed crowd at weekends. Hire one of the hotel’s bicycles (R$25 for the day) for the five-minute roll downhill to Praia Brava.

Pros

Hospedaria das Brisas

$$$ | Caminho do Alto do Morro s/n, Praia do Rosa, 88780-000, Brazil
A solid midrange option for families, Hospedaria das Brisas has ample outdoor space and is a five-minute stroll from the beach. The only letdown is the outdoor pool and hot tub, neither of which are aging gracefully. Sparsely decorated, whitewashed rooms, equipped with both air-conditioning and a fireplace for the changing seasons, are set in two-story blocks in the garden; book ahead to nab the one that boasts a sea view.
