Casa Verde

$$ | Calle Potosi 374, Sucre, Bolivia

Well located on a quiet street a few blocks from the plaza, Casa Verde is a small, comfortable B&B that is perfect for those looking for a calm, quiet base from which to explore Sucre. Owner René takes a little warming up, but is very knowledgeable about the city and can be a great help with organizing your time in and around Sucre. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable, and the large common area and covered swimming pool are pleasant.

  • Full kitchen available for use

Grand Hotel

$$ | Anciento Arce 61, Sucre, Bolivia

This is a good option for those on a budget who still want to stay in colonial-style splendor—so long as you don’t mind some peeling paint and a healthy dose of kitsch in the furnishings. It's not totally without charm: the interior courtyard is colorfully painted and full of greenery, and the rooms, although worn and not very well illuminated, are spacious and clean. There is a small crafts market across the road; a lot of the crafts are pretty generic, but it will do for some traditional woven textiles in a pinch.

Pros

  • Cheap option in a traditional Sucre colonial mansion
  • Good location close to the plaza

Cons

  • Breakfast is (Bs)15 extra
  • Lots of street noise in the common areas

Hostal La Casona

$$ | Chuquisaca 460, Potosí, Bolivia

Among the very uninspiring collection of hotels and generally apathetic service that Potosí offers, La Casona is easily the best budget option despite its decidedly backpacker feel. The staff is hit and miss, but some are friendly and helpful, and the location is the best selling point—it's in a beautiful old building just a block and a half from the main plaza. The rooms are spartan at best, but those with a private bathroom are clean, warm, and more than sufficient as a base for a few days. The breakfast is forgettable; rather, eat out with the money you saved by not bothering with one of the bigger, more expensive hotels. The Wi-Fi is better in some locations than others; check before settling into your room.

Pros

  • Great location
  • Beautiful colonial bulding and courtyard
  • Well priced

Cons

  • Backpacker vibe
  • Unreliable Wi-Fi

Tukos la Casa Real

$$ | Hoyos 29, Potosí, Bolivia

An all-round decent option a few blocks up from the plaza, this hotel offers simple, comfortable rooms and friendly staff. The location is good, although uphill, and everything is generally clean and pleasant. The attached restaurant isn't a bad option; the breakfast is fine, although the quality is up and down.

Pros

  • Friendly and accommodating staff
  • Rooms are warm with plenty of extra blankets
  • Good value for Potosí, and the owners are working hard to improve

Cons

  • Sketchy Wi-Fi
  • The internal parking on the way to the rooms can be unpleasant if the hotel is busy
