5 Best Hotels in Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna, Lake Titicaca

Background Illustration for Hotels

You will be amply rewarded for your climb up the steps from the port—the higher you go, the cheaper the hostels, or posadas. They are almost all quite basic so, in most cases, you will be trading the bells and whistles of upper-quality hotels for a peaceful retreat with gorgeous views. If you go without a reservation, you'll likely find women or children waiting at Yumani's port to invite you to stay. The north side of the island is more barren but also has attractive options, including a place on the beach itself.

La Estancia Ecolodge

$$$$ | South end, Isla del Sol, Bolivia Fodor's Choice

Staggered on a hillside, each of this property's bungalows is named for a type of flora and has an unobstructed view of Lake Titicaca, making this the perfect place to watch the sunrise. The eco-lodge uses alternative energy, recycles water back into the garden, and takes garbage off the island. All 15 palapa-adobe buildings have hot-water showers warmed by solar power, and Trombe walls heat the rustic-European-style rooms with stone-floor bathrooms and beamed ceilings. Three-course meals are served at a set time in a common dining area, and both breakfast and dinner are included in the rate, which is significantly cheaper if booked through the office in La Paz.

Pros

  • Excellent views
  • Great showers
  • Dinners integrate local flavors

Cons

  • Expensive for location
  • Meals are at a set time
  • Wi-Fi is not great

Posada del Inca Eco Lodge

$$$$ | South end, Isla del Sol, Bolivia Fodor's Choice

Your stay at this lovely posada, what is surely the best lodging on the island, begins with a 30-minute mule ride from the boat dock to the garden-lobby, where fruit trees shade handmade reed couches, and the hillside location offers sweeping lake views. Rooms in this beautifully restored, colonial-style hacienda are attractively furnished with reclaimed wood, and showers, wall heaters, and electric blankets are all powered by solar energy. Before dinner, guests gather around the fire in the cozy bar where oxygen is available for those acclimating to the altitude. Rooms must be booked as part of a hydrofoil tour with Crillón Tours in La Paz, making this one of the more expensive options on the island.

Pros

  • High standard of service
  • Good food
  • Most comfortable rooms on the island

Cons

  • Must be booked with more expensive hydrofoil tour
  • You may have to walk uphill and steps from the port
  • Rooms can be cool but electric blankets are available

Hostal Phaxsi

$$ | Yumani Port, Isla del Sol, Bolivia

If you don't relish the idea of hauling your luggage up to the village, consider this option in Yumani Port, where several large rooms—housed behind adobe walls and small verandas facing the lake—have pastel color schemes, plush beds, spacious en suite baths, and air-conditioning. This hotel definitely sets the bar higher than most of the surrounding, soulless concrete blocks.

Pros

  • Unobstructed lake view
  • Good value
  • A bit more character than other properties in town

Cons

  • Boat and tourist traffic gets noisy in midafternoon
  • Sometimes books up in advance
  • Solar-powered showers, so the water is warmer as day goes on

Palla Khasa

$$$ | Yumani Village, Isla del Sol, Bolivia
Just steps from Yumani, this well-manicured top property has 14 circular stone bungalows with gas heaters that look like Inca turrets from afar. Inside, tiled bathrooms, wooden floors, and bedstands give it a proper rustic, homey feeling. The restaurant has an earthen oven baking the usual Titicaca pizzas, but you'll want to try a bite of their regional cuisine.

Pros

  • Scenic
  • Within walking distance of other food options
  • Fireplace in the dining hall

Cons

  • An hour uphill from the port
  • Service can be hit or miss
