La Bamba de Areco

$$$$ | Ruta 31, San Antonio de Areco, Argentina

Dating from the 1830s, the venerable La Bamba de Areco was once an important stop along the road from Buenos Aires to northern Argentina. In the heart of the pampas, the rustic ranch has been converted into a luxurious boutique hotel that combines period details like beamed ceiling and shuttered windows with pampering amenities like king-size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets. La Pulpería, the property's oldest building, holds a formal dining room (you can also dine outside under the plane trees), a bar, and a breakfast area. There's also a pool, and horseback tours of the property are offered.

Pros

 • Peace and quiet
 • Gorgeous decor
 • Great for outdoors lovers

Cons

 • Might be too isolated for some
 • No Wi-Fi in rooms
 • Pricey

La Cayetana Hotel Boutique

$ | México 1330, Buenos Aires, 1097, Argentina

This reformed casa chorizo—named such because the connected rooms resemble the links of a chorizo sausage—dates back to 1820, a fact that won't escape you as you enter the long, open-air entrance with plants and fountains on the left and rooms on the right. Each of the rooms is decorated in a different color scheme; some have sky-high ceilings, while others have quaint alcoves and lofts; all sit behind imposing wooden doors. Other boutique properties offer more amenities and luxury for the same price, but stay here to revel in the charm of Buenos Aires' past.

Pros

 • A cozy common area and well-stocked library are perfect for relaxing and reading
 • A parrilla (grill) is available if you feel like trying your hand at an Argentine asado (barbecue)

Cons

 • A bit off the beaten path
 • The neighborhood can be dodgy at night, so take a taxi

La Tierra de Leyendas

$$$ | Tierra de Vientos 2448, Ushuaia, 9410, Argentina

This adorable B&B is a honeymooners' delight, thanks to the multiple personal touches, from home-cooked cuisine to family photos on the walls. The hotel is in the Estancia Río Pipo, on a wind-battered hill 4 km (2.5 miles) west of town, in an area once inhabited by canoeist nomads, but it's now being encroached on by the expanding city. The seven bedrooms—with names such as La Coqueta and La Misión—boast large windows facing the Beagle Channel or the snow-capped Andes, with soft, luxurious beds and charming photos of old shipwrecks. A cozy living room offers a book exchange, board games, video library, and glass display tables with antique arrows, bones, and currency. The restaurant has a top-notch gourmet menu—offering such exotic fare as conejo a la cazadora (stuffed rabbit) or seafood au gratin—prepared by the owner.

Pros

 • Tasty food in restaurant
 • Enthusiastic, personal, and attentive service
 • All seven rooms have views

Cons

 • The street name is no joke—it's insanely windy

Blessed with the city's most gorgeous sitting room, the Legado Mítico also has an enormous library with plush leather couches, antique furnishings, a fireplace, and bookshelves stocked with English- and Spanish-language classics. Nothofagus

$$ | Hensen, at Riquelme, El Chaltén, 9301, Argentina

A simple B&B off the main road, Nothofagus is named after the southern beech tree, and the lodge has a rough-hewn, woodsy feel with exposed beams and leaves stamped into the lampshades. Unlike in lodgings closer to the valley wall, the breakfast room offers unobstructed views of the Fitzroy spires on a clear morning. The rooms are comfortable and clean, if a bit bare.

Plas y Coed

$ | Irigoyen 320, Gaiman, 9105, Argentina

Gaiman's oldest teahouse has also been a bed-and-breakfast since 1997, and a stay here is rather like visiting with a favorite aunt: the rooms are simple but immaculate, have polished wooden floors and pastel bedspreads, and there's a comfy lounge area for relaxing in. Outside the redbrick building is Gaiman's oldest rose garden: the bushes arching over the entryway to the teahouse are more than 100 years old.

Pros

 • Family atmosphere
 • Great teahouse and cakes
 • Comfortable common room

Posada Puerto Bemberg

$$$ | Fundadores Bemberg s/n, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Less than an hour south of Puerto Iguazú (35 minutes from the falls), the posada (inn) was built in 1943 to lodge guests to the yerba mate plantation, and the new owners, a lovely and helpful couple, reopened it in 2007. The interiors were renovated but retain their charm and remarkable craftsmanship, most notably in the dining room/library. The large rooms are not fancy but very comfortably furnished. Meals for the set two-choice menu are lovingly prepared and may be enjoyed on the veranda. Activities include kayaking on the Paraná River, which borders the property, and a ride along the river to the magical and secluded salto Yasy, a small waterfall and swimming hole (or wading, in dry season), or just lazing by the swimming pool. Staff are very knowledgeable of the area's flora and fauna and, if you're in luck, will call attention to a howler monkey.

A glorious five-bedroom house designed by Alejandro Bustillo is over 200 yards of jungle from the posada, with its own access road, and is also available for up to 12 people. Built for the original worldly owners, it's filled with period furniture as well as black-and-white photographs of family here and in faraway places. The house includes its own, albeit smaller, swimming pool, and the house staff includes a cook, though guests are free to use the kitchen and outdoor parrilla.

Pros

 • Not far from Iguazú Falls
 • Knowledgeable staff
 • Relaxing atmosphere

Cons

 • Far from the city
 • Limited dining menu
 • Limited activities

Rendez-Vous Hotel

$$ | Bonpland 1484, Buenos Aires, 1414, Argentina

The fresh exterior of this French Petit Hotel pops on the streets of Palermo Hollywood, while the warm oranges, creams, and dark browns decorating the ground floor lure guests inside. Each room in the century-old house has its own color and theme, and if they bring on a feeling of calmness, it could be because they were arranged with Feng Shui principles in mind. While the style is overwhelmingly French-modern—the owner is French—Argentine touches such as Pop Art portraits of famous porteño personalities run throughout.

Pros

 • An inviting ground-floor setup for breakfast, drinks, and reading
