Océano Patagonia

$$$ | Accesso Ballanero, Puerto Pirámides, Argentina Fodor's Choice

These unique "eco residences" have an ideal location, steps away from the center of the tiny town yet tucked away on the oceanfront. They are upscale, stylish suites with their own kitchenettes and mesmerizing views of the sea (on the first and second floor, the ground-floor view is blocked by trees). They are also eco-conscious, with a geo-thermal heating/cooling system and water-efficient technologies. It's the best spot in town by a long shot.

Pros

  • Mesmerizing ocean views
  • Eco-friendly architecture
  • Kitchenettes

Cons

  • Trees block view from ground floor suites
  • Simple breakfast
  • Noise through thin walls

Palacio Duhau - Park Hyatt Buenos Aires

$$$$ | Av. Alvear 1661, Buenos Aires, 1014, Argentina
Park Hyatt Palacio Duhau, Recoleta
Hyatt Hotels

This landmark hotel ups the ante for elegance in Buenos Aires—its two buildings, a restored 1930s-era mansion and a 17-story tower, are connected by an underground art gallery and an expansive, leafy garden that's among the city's most attractive outdoor areas. The rooms are decorated in rich wood, elegant marble, and soft-to-the-touch Argentine leather. Sip a whiskey at the Oak Bar, constructed from 17th-century carvings from a Normandy castle, or on the patio overlooking the garden. Be sure to book into the Ahín Spa (named after a Mapuche Indian welcoming ritual), which offers holistic and beauty treatments. The 3,500-bottle Wine Library is a unique attraction.

Pros

  • Understated splendor
  • Two great restaurants inlcuding a veggie one
  • Houses the city's largest indoor pool

Cons

  • A long walk from one side of the hotel to the other
  • Far from the subway
  • Elevators are small

Posada Puerto Bemberg

$$$ | Fundadores Bemberg s/n, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Less than an hour south of Puerto Iguazú (35 minutes from the falls), the posada (inn) was built in 1943 to lodge guests to the yerba mate plantation, and the new owners, a lovely and helpful couple, reopened it in 2007. The interiors were renovated but retain their charm and remarkable craftsmanship, most notably in the dining room/library. The large rooms are not fancy but very comfortably furnished. Meals for the set two-choice menu are lovingly prepared and may be enjoyed on the veranda. Activities include kayaking on the Paraná River, which borders the property, and a ride along the river to the magical and secluded salto Yasy, a small waterfall and swimming hole (or wading, in dry season), or just lazing by the swimming pool. Staff are very knowledgeable of the area's flora and fauna and, if you're in luck, will call attention to a howler monkey.

A glorious five-bedroom house designed by Alejandro Bustillo is over 200 yards of jungle from the posada, with its own access road, and is also available for up to 12 people. Built for the original worldly owners, it's filled with period furniture as well as black-and-white photographs of family here and in faraway places. The house includes its own, albeit smaller, swimming pool, and the house staff includes a cook, though guests are free to use the kitchen and outdoor parrilla.

Pros

  • Not far from Iguazú Falls
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Relaxing atmosphere

Cons

  • Far from the city
  • Limited dining menu
  • Limited activities
