Designed to capture the spirit of the region's indigenous heritage and early trading post days, this rambling, upscale hotel is an excellent base for exploring Vancouver and even Northeast Portland. The Society Hotel Bingen

$$ | 210 N. Cedar St., Bingen, 98605, USA Fodor's Choice

Featuring a converted 1937 schoolhouse and a ring of sleek cabins set around a spa and bathhouse, this stylish but unpretentious Scandinavian-inspired compound is a perfect base for hiking, wine touring, and chilling out on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. Like its sister property in Portland, the Society offers budget-friendly hostel accommodations in smartly designed group bunk rooms as well as private rooms with shared baths, but the gorgeous cedar cabins are a great fit if you're looking for something a bit swankier, as they have nicely outfitted kitchenettes and covered patios with hammocks and picnic tables. In addition to the bathhouse with wet-spa facilities and massage rooms, the inviting and ample common spaces include a large lobby-library lounge and a café serving espresso drinks, cocktails, and light food.

Pros

  • Stunning contemporary design
  • Soothing bathhouse with hot tubs and sauna
  • Kitchenettes in cabins

Cons

  • Some rooms share bath
  • Not within walking distance of many restaurants
  • Bathhouse can get crowded on weekends

Tenzen Cabin & Springs

$$ | 932 Berge Rd., Stevenson, 98648, USA Fodor's Choice

Comprising six airy, high-ceilinged modern cabins with stylish kitchenettes, indoor-outdoor geothermal soaking tubs, and expansive decks, this 100-acre woodland hideaway is ideal for a restorative retreat in nature—within moments of your arrival, you'll probably notice your blood pressure abating. This a cabin-rental complex rather than a hotel per se, as there's no lobby or common facilities, but that also means you'll enjoy total privacy throughout your stay. Downtown Stevenson is a 10-minute drive, and there's plenty of great hiking nearby.

Heathman Lodge

$$ | 7801 N.E. Greenwood Dr., Vancouver, 98662, USA

Designed in the tradition of a grand mountain lodge—with Native American wood carvings, Pendleton blankets, and a stunning log-beam lobby—this rustic-chic hotel is marred only by its bland suburban location in Vancouver, Washington. But this stylish retreat is a good choice if you're seeking distinctive rooms and resort amenities (an indoor pool and a health-and-fitness center) at significantly lower rates than what you'll pay in downtown Portland. Rooms are spacious, with custom-built wood furniture, and some suites have gas fireplaces. On-site Hudson's Bar & Grill serves consistently good Pacific Northwest–inspired fare.

Pros

  • Handsome, reasonably priced rooms
  • Very good restaurant on-site
  • Free parking and proximity to aiport

Cons

  • Dull office-park setting
  • 25-minute drive from downtown Portland
