Springhill Suites Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$$$ | 901 Atlantic Ave., Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA

Yes, this is a hotel chain in the Marriott family, but it still stands out from the pack because all the rooms here are suites—outfitted with two flat-screen TVs, separate living area, and granite-counter-top kitchenettes. The rooms have bursts of color: red, blue, and yellow linens and carpets mixed with tropical art on the walls. Its location is close to events on the end of the boardwalk. From the balcony you can see fireworks (when launched) and free beach concerts. Breakfast is always included; the Belgian-waffle station is a standout. And parking is free—a rarity on the beach. Although it's a newer property, some of the rooms' carpets are showing damage. Ask to inspect a room before booking it.

  • Great location
  • Indoor and outdoor pool
  • Parking and breakfast included in rate

Cons

  • Long walk to the action on 31st Street
  • Outdoor pool always crowded (towels left on loungers)

Williamsburg Lodge & Conference Center

$$ | 310 S. England St., Colonial Williamsburg, VA, 23187-1776, USA
While not your cheapest option, this relatively budget-friendly option in Colonial Williamsburg has a great location close to the historic district, but the hotel itself lacks the charm of the Colonial Houses, which don't cost that much more. Rooms, however, are appointed with furnishings inspired by the collections of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and every room has a hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and clock radio. Rooms with fireplaces are available. Guests get admission ticket discounts, and have convenient access to a spa and golf.

Pros

  • Excellent choice for families
  • Some rooms adjoin

Cons

  • Hosts lots of large weddings and conferences
  • A busy hotel where check-in and checkout can be slow

Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$ | 57th St. at Oceanfront, Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA

Away from the boardwalk, the hotel feels like a quiet getaway—rooms that do not face the ocean directly have either a partial view or overlook the swimming pool. The modern lobby has a skylighted atrium. The Surf Club Ocean Grill serves—predictably—seafood. Tuesday nights are great for kids with movie-night big-screen TVs outside by the beach.

Pros

  • Accepts pets (additional fee), but only if the reservation is made directly through the hotel
  • Bargain compared to boardwalk properties

Cons

  • The hotel is north of the main action on the boardwalk
