Williamsburg Lodge & Conference Center

$$ | 310 S. England St., Colonial Williamsburg, VA, 23187-1776, USA
While not your cheapest option, this relatively budget-friendly option in Colonial Williamsburg has a great location close to the historic district, but the hotel itself lacks the charm of the Colonial Houses, which don't cost that much more. Rooms, however, are appointed with furnishings inspired by the collections of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, and every room has a hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and clock radio. Rooms with fireplaces are available. Guests get admission ticket discounts, and have convenient access to a spa and golf.

Pros

  • Excellent choice for families
  • Some rooms adjoin

Cons

  • Hosts lots of large weddings and conferences
  • A busy hotel where check-in and checkout can be slow

Williamsburg Sampler Bed & Breakfast Inn

$$ | 922 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, VA, 23185-3917, USA

Charming and hospitable, this redbrick inn near the historic district is modeled after a plantation-style house from the 1700s. Rooms have 18th- and 19th-century antiques, pewter pieces, four-poster beds, and pleasant views of the city. The suites are particularly inviting: each has a separate sitting room, French doors, and a porch overlooking gardens. There are no phones in the rooms, but local calls are free from the inn's foyer.

Pros

  • A trip back in time
  • Great value

Cons

  • Not for you if you don't enjoy the B&amp
  • B experience
  • Two nights required stay on weekends

Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$ | 57th St. at Oceanfront, Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA

Away from the boardwalk, the hotel feels like a quiet getaway—rooms that do not face the ocean directly have either a partial view or overlook the swimming pool. The modern lobby has a skylighted atrium. The Surf Club Ocean Grill serves—predictably—seafood. Tuesday nights are great for kids with movie-night big-screen TVs outside by the beach.

Pros

  • Accepts pets (additional fee), but only if the reservation is made directly through the hotel
  • Bargain compared to boardwalk properties

Cons

  • The hotel is north of the main action on the boardwalk
