WaterWorks Art Museum

Although the holding tanks of a 100-year-old water-treatment plant might not seem like the best location for fine art, the 10,000-square-foot WaterWorks Art Museum is actually very attractive. Overlooking the Yellowstone River, this permanent exhibit reflects the town's Western heritage and features both regional and national exhibits and features. The museum store features a variety of original artwork, reproductions, ceramics, and a good selection of Western U.S. history books.

Wilzig Erotic Art Museum (WEAM)

Late millionaire Naomi Wilzig's collection of some 4,000 erotic items is on display at this unique museum. Expect sexy art of varying quality—fertility statues from around the globe and historic Japanese shunga books (erotic art offered as gifts to new brides on their wedding night) share the space with some kitschy knickknacks. If this is your thing, an original phallic prop from Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and an over-the-top Kama Sutra bed are worth the price of admission. Kids 17 and under are not admitted.

WNDR San Diego

Gaslamp Quarter

Featuring more than 20 immersive exhibits created by local and international artists, designers, and makers, the museum is a multisensory art and technology experience for all ages that challenges viewers to look at (and experience) art in a new way. Among its exhibits are Masterpiece, which allows interactive distortion of familiar works of art, as well as the disorienting Quantum Mirror and the game-like interactive One Minute. Don't miss the Compliment Machine for a quick pick-me-up, and be sure to schedule at least an hour (or two) for the full experience. Guests with sensory processing sensitivities to light and sound may wish to proceed with caution.

Woodmere Art Museum

Chestnut Hill

On the far side of Chestnut Hill, on the slope leading toward the suburbs, this Philly artist–centric museum focuses on 19th- and 20th-century eastern Pennsylvania art. The permanent collection features mid-1900s woodcuts and a number of 19th-century Pennsylvania landscapes. The largely contemporary special exhibitions are often very engaging, along with live jazz and classical music, movie nights, and workshops. There's a popular, if overpriced, haystack maze each October outside.

Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts

This museum, just a few minutes west of Maitland, is in Eatonville, the first African-American town to be incorporated after the Civil War. It showcases works by artists of African descent during five six-week-long exhibitions each year, with one reserved for up-and-comers. The museum is named after former resident Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960), a writer, folklorist, and anthropologist best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. This is the home of ZORA!—a three-day cultural, arts, and music festival that's held in late January to celebrate Hurston's life. The museum also has a roster of other events throughout the year.
