Artist Jill Hoy has summered on Deer Isle since she was 10 years old. In 1986, she opened her own gallery to exhibit her contemporary landscapes that can also be seen at the Portland Museum of Art, Harvard Business School, and the Boston Public Library. Lanai Art Center

Local artists display their work at this dynamic center staffed by volunteers (hours are a bit flexible because of this). Workshops in pottery, photography, woodworking, and painting welcome visitors. The gift shop sells Lanai handicrafts and special offerings, the sale of which underwrites children's art classes. Gallerist Becker and his wife, Heidi Nivling, display the kind of austere, abstract art that prompts people who don't know any better to say, "Hey, my kid could do that." Look more closely at the conceptual paintings featured in this small gallery and you'll notice the great skill required to make minimalist art with maximal effect. This gallery displays several exhibits throughout the year. 

Lema's Kokopelli Gallery

The Lema family has built a reputation for fair prices on a large selection of Native American and Southwest-theme jewelry, art, pottery, rugs, and more. Everything sold here is authentic.

A Little Mad Shop

This colorful shop delights customers with items such as curvy floor leaf lamps (yes, made with real leaves), enameled glass copper art tiles with realistic yet often dreamy images, and fine art prints featuring a whimsical female character. Jewelry, candles, and the like are also sold. The couple who own, live above, and run this “curiously unique” store are the only employees, and can provide the stories and craft behind the works.
