MedMen

West Hollywood

The legalization of marijuana in California has led to an explosion of cannabis shops around Los Angeles. One of the most reputable is MedMen, a more refined dispensary that traffics in high-quality buds in a very welcoming environment. Here you can find edibles, vaporizers, concentrates, topical ointments, and more cannabis-laced products. A cannabis shop with a cause, MedMen is also actively involved in criminal justice reform.

Miles City Saddlery

The craftspeople at Miles City Saddlery, in business since 1909, design custom saddles of legendary quality. They also craft saddlebags, holsters, and other leather goods. Even if you're not buying, this is worth a stop.

Newbury Comics

Harvard Square

What started as $2000 and a comic book collection in 1978 by MIT roommates Mike Dreese and John Brusger is now is a beloved source for music, movies, comics, and other pop-culture goods. Leading with a big nod to independent artists, you'll find everything from exclusive color vinyls to bobbleheads and every cheeky T-shirt in between. This spot is in the Garage (a small yet iconic indoor mall that's going through some big renovations), and the two Boston locations are Newbury Street and in Faneuil Hall.

NuWu Cannabis Marketplace

Nevada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, and today about 80% of the state's dispensaries are located in Las Vegas. The largest of these, NuWu Cannabis Marketplace, is 16,000 square feet and sits just outside Downtown. The facility is open 24 hours a day and boasts a drive-through for those who don't want to leave their limos or rideshares. There's even a tasting room (technically they call it a consumption lounge). Be prepared to fork over your ID when you buy, and remember that it's cash only, at least for now. It's also worth noting that you can't fly with cannabis products, so it's best to use what you buy before you skip town.

The Old Mill Store

The Old Mill Store specializes in handmade and hand-crafted pieces made by local artists and craftspeople, including jewelry, hand-carved boxes, whimsical leather goods, coffee tables, consoles, and so much more. Here, the art of the unexpected is celebrated. Look for paintings, sculpture, hand-hewn furnishings, pottery, and vintage toys on your treasure hunt, and refuel with an ice cream cone from the general store.

Orlando Harley-Davidson

Disney Springs

America's largest motorcycle manufacturer has been going strong since 1903, and its apparel has been popular for nearly as long. Harley enthusiasts of all ages can buy biker jackets, vests, T-shirts, patches, and other gear. Climb aboard an iconic hog for a photo op.

Orvis Flagship Store

The lodgelike Orvis store carries the company's latest clothing, fly-fishing gear, and pet supplies—there's even a trout pond. At this required shopping destination for many visitors—the Orvis name is pure Manchester—there are demonstrations of how fly rods are constructed and tested. You can attend fly-fishing school across the street.

Pink Gorilla Games

University District

Primarily a video game store, here you'll find a huge variety of new and used classics and rare games for all consoles, with a focus on imported and retro games going back to Atari times. They also carry toys and their own branded merchandise, which is pretty snazzy. They have locations on Capitol Hill and in the International District.

Planet 13 Las Vegas

North Strip

It's a pot of fun—literally. This cannabis superstore not only has the goods—smokables, cannabis extracts, and all manner of cannabis-infused products, including edibles—but it's also framed in a good-time vibe unlike other dispensaries. It's different right from the get-go, with a secret-phone-booth entrance that opens into an art-bedecked space. Resembling another planet that could live in your imagination (especially if you partake of their stock), the creative atmosphere includes selfie spots and interactive art elements. When it comes to matching the ambience to the product, Planet 13's dispensary has it down to a science. And, most importantly, the budtenders know their stuff, so you can feel well guided through everything you need to know before making the right (and safe) purchase.

Wilmington Island

The home base of this sweet international brand is always buzzing. All of Savannah Bee Company's honey varietals, body care products, gifts, and more are available in this spacious showroom, and the enclosed indoor hive makes it possible to see the busy bees at work. Sea Bags

Old Port and Waterfront

The brand's flagship location displays totes in every shape and size made from recycled sailcloth and decorated with bright, graphic patterns. Check out the display that shows you exactly how a sail is used to create all the different bags and accessories. The factory store, located just a few blocks away on the Custom House Wharf, is where the bags are actually sewn; you can find some factory sales as well.

Seaside Inverted

The concept is simple, silly, and fun: you and a group of friends (kids love this place) show up and pose for pictures—the staff will help you bring out your inner goofiness—in each of the eight themed upside-down scenes, and you leave with a bunch of frameable mementos. The inverted vignettes include a saloon, a kitchen, and a Seaside's own promenade.

Seaweed Co.

South Portland

With a knowledgeable crew of "budtenders," Seaweed Co.'s flagship location is unusually spacious, with plenty of room to gather with fellow enthusiasts or the staff and learn more about the products that range from flower to sleep aids and edibles to tinctures. The bright and sunny store is lined in blonde woods and tables filled with products, and sitting areas indoors and out. Food trucks, live music, and events sometimes make a showing. There is a second, smaller location in Portland's Bayside neighborhood.

Serge's Wigs

West Side

If you've always wished for the sleek tresses of the stunning Vegas showgirls (or female impersonators), or if you want to try a daring new look for the clubs, head to this bright and spacious Vegas institution. You'll find an expansive selection of natural-hair and synthetic wigs and hairpieces available in many styles, lengths, and colors, as well as accoutrements such as Styrofoam heads, hair adhesives, shampoos, scarves/turbans, and eyelashes.  A hair covering must be worn (scarf, bandana, nylon stocking) or purchased before trying on wigs (and the cost credited back if you purchase something). Allow additional time for cutting, styling, and proper fitting of your hairpiece if you plan to wear it on the same day of purchase.

Serra Dispensary

A beautifully designed cannabis shop in which carefully curated marijuana is displayed in blue ceramic dishes inside blond-wood cases, Serra stands out for its knowledgeable staff and decidedly artisanal aesthetic. They'll lend you a bronze magnifying glass if you want a closer inspection of the products, which also include cannabis-infused local chocolates, gummies, and other edibles. Squarehead Industries

The globally sourced men's and women's clothing, accessories, and home goods at this on-trend shop reflect the local owners' focus on sustainably produced wares that are both nicely designed and good for people and the planet. They call their curated look a balance between California bohemian design and Scandinavian minimalism. Prices aren't low, but the items are attractive and stylish.

Stidham Saddlery

You come here for the beautifully crafted custom leather goods made by Seth Stidham, from belts to briefcases to saddles (!), and stay to gawk at the workshop and gallery that exhibits the highest level of skill and artistry. Commission a very special handmade belt, pick up a hand-painted Western tie, or find a piece of turquoise jewelry or piece of art to hang on your wall.

Sunset and Co.

Alamo Heights

Previously known as Sunset Ridge Home and Hardware, the name Sunset & Co. may be new, but it's the same wonderful place to browse to your heart's content. The store seems endless, brimming with gifts and accessories for him and her, bath and body products, travel bags, clothing and accessories for babies and kids, and more. Home decor and accents abound, as well as hardware, Weber grills and accessories, coolers, tool sets, organizational and storage products, and high-end cooking appliances.

Sweet Dirt

Back Cove

Clean and high-quality recreational cannabis—in forms ranging from edibles and concentrates to topicals—is the focus of this local company, started in 2015 by a husband-and-wife team. Sustainability is also a focus; the duo champions organic growing practices, growing plants in living soil, rich in organic matter and beneficial microbes, with clean water.

Ten Thousand Villages

The Pearl District

This is one of those stores you visit when you can't seem to find the right gift. They showcase unique, ethically sourced handcrafted products from more than 130 artisan groups in about 20 countries. Their selection is staggering, and the categories seem endless: accessories, jewelry, indoor and outdoor home decor, textiles, baskets, stationery, tableware, linens, birdhouses, garden, bath and body, and gifts for everyone from the wellness guru to the foodie.

Terrain at Styer's

The Philly-based folks behind Anthropologie also created Terrain, a lively store that integrates the outdoors (a garden center) with the indoors (stylish home accessories). Though this branch is set amid shopping centers, its barn- and greenhouse-like buildings (some from Styer's, the nursery formerly in this location) create a small, enchanted world. Seasonal plants appear outdoors and inside, and terrariums, planters and pots, serving pieces and dishes, and books, soaps, and lotions are all in the mix. Seasonal decorations in December are truly charming. Linger at the excellent café for coffee or lunch, a drink at the bar, or dinner.

Time Travel Mart

Echo Park

You probably won’t find anything useful in the Time Travel Mart, and that’s exactly the point. From dinosaur eggs to robot milk, this is a store that touts the absurdly hilarious—all of which should bring back memories of your childhood and maybe a little bit of joy. That's because the store holds a secret: it’s really a fundraiser for the nonprofit 826LA, which tutors neighborhood kids in the back section. So buy something unnecessary but absolutely wonderful, for a worthy cause.
