Brandini Toffee

What started as a fundraising endeavor for a high-school trip to Italy in 2006 has grown into a four-store, family-owned empire peddling the preservative-free, non-GMO, chocolate-topped toffee that has been touted by Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart. You can watch candy being made while enjoying toffee milk shakes, pretzels, popcorn, brownies, or ice-cream bars. You can also stock up on souvenir tins. (Good luck getting them all the way home.)

Brass Monkey

Brentwood Country Mart

Brentwood

This family-friendly faux country market was first built in the postwar boom of the 1940s and remains a staple of the community. Among the dozens of stores are Goop (Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle brand's gorgeous first brick-and-mortar store), Turpan (for luxury home goods), James Perse (for laid-back cotton knits), Jenni Kayne (for a curated mix of modern clothing, housewares, and gifts), and Malia Mills (for American-made swimwear separates). Grab a chicken basket at Reddi Chick and chow down on the open-air patio.

Bric-a-Brac Records & Collectibles

Kids of the 80s and early 90s, prepare to have your nostalgia buttons pushed: in addition to a great selection of used vinyl, this is the spot to peruse vintage Simpsons merch, He-Man toys, and WWF figurines. On-site coffee shop, the Brewed, has a horror theme; ogle campy movie posters while you snack on retro cereal like Count Chocula, sold by the bowl.

Brick n Barn

Dating back to 1872, this former homestead of baking legend Betty Crocker opens its gates monthly for antique shows hosted in a massive white barn. Step inside for themed events, unveiling a range of inventory including midcentury, industrial, vintage, rustic, primitive, and French country items. Ten local artisans, food trucks, craft workshops, and gardens with free-range birds make this a family-friendly outing. You'll often find homemade baked goods and gourmet coffee to enjoy on the manicured grounds. Check their website for show dates and other events.

Brickbat Books

Queen Village

The charming, worn-in feel of this store lined with wooden shelves befits the merchandise for sale: the focus is on rare, small-press used and new books, although it's not unheard of to find a $4 Hardy Boys paperback next to a first-edition Edward Gorey. The store also acts as a venue for fringe musicians from near and far. Follow Brickbat on Instagram (@brickbatphilly) to stay abreast of the latest arrivals.

BRICs

On his runs and bike rides along the Monon Trail, Indianapolis native David Vonnegut-Gabovitch used to pass the vacant, dilapidated century-old Broad Ripple railway station. He thought an ice cream shop would fit perfectly there. So in 2010, he and his partners opened the adorable BRICs (Broad Ripple Ice Cream), and they've been scooping up sweet goodness ever since. Go for traditional vanilla, chocolate or strawberry; or go crazy with blends like yellow cake batter, Broad Ripple blackberry, and chocolate malt supreme. Some of the 35-plus flavors are brought in from South Haven, Michigan, favorite, Sherman's. During the winter, get a mug of made-to-order hot cocoa and snuggle by the fireplace.

Bridgham & Cook, Ltd.

If you're an Anglophile or a Brit missing Merrie Old England, this is the shop for you. Among the many shelves of imported goods are proper teapots, lots of English teas, Branston pickle and other condiments, Lyle's golden syrup, biscuits, sweets, and preserves. You'll also find tartan scarves, knitted sweaters, tweed caps, single-malt glasses, pint glasses, jewelry, and calendars.

Bridgton Books

Spacious and unpretentious, with several spots to cozy up and peruse a book, this beloved downtown bookstore has been in business since 1993. Author and native Mainer Stephen King, who summers in these parts, is a customer and has done book signings here. The helpful staff includes the husband-and-wife owners. Many regulars head straight for the "staff picks"—for recent and all-time kids and adult suggestions. There's a large bargain books area, used books are in the back, and nonfiction offerings are divided into an impressive number of labeled sections, like “nature” and “science.”  Among the fun gift items: totes that match popular books sold here, 3D puzzles, and wood-cut bathymetric maps, coasters, bookmarks, and ornaments made by a local artist, with designs featuring local lakes.

Brookfield Place

Financial District

Once called the Winter Garden, this expanded mall and event destination in the World Financial Center stands out for its towering indoor palm trees, New York Harbor and WTC plaza views, and luxury stores, including downtown outlets for Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, not to mention more down-to-earth shopping at J.Crew, Bonobos, and Lululemon. More interesting might be the dining options, including the best food court downtown, Hudson Eats (which has Black Seed Bagel, Dos Toros Taqueria, and Ani Ramen), among many other offerings. On the ground floor is Le District, a kind of Eataly for French cuisine. Outside in summer is an outdoor dining area with food stands (and a bar); in winter it becomes an ice-skating rink. Look out for events both during the week and on weekends year-round.
