Asia Barong

Fodor's Choice

The eye-catching sculptures visible from the roadside only hint at the vast spectacle inside what bills itself as America's largest Asian art store—customers include the Smithsonian and the Hell's Angels Clubhouse. Carvings of every conceivable material (from wood to whalebone), size (from half an inch to 8 feet tall), and subject matter (albeit heavy on the gods and dragons) can be found here (or made-to-order and shipped). The sheer volume of art outstrips many museums, but you can still buy a traditional sarong or a gift from the $5 shelves. Humorous signs throughout the store add a touch of character.

Aspen Saturday Market

Fodor's Choice

Show up in downtown Aspen any Saturday from mid-June to early October, and you can enjoy the Aspen Saturday Market, a sort of farmers' market–meets–arts fair. Tents cluster along the corner of Galena and Hopkins and then extend to the intersection of Hyman and Galena. Everything here is Colorado made (or grown), from pottery and paintings to peppers and peaches. Enjoy live music and ready-made foods to eat on the spot.

Astor Wines & Spirits

East Village Fodor's Choice

Stock up on wine, spirits, and everything else alcohol-related at this sprawling, below-sidewalk-level shop; it often has the bottle you can't find anywhere else. Among Astor's other assets are a wine library, a kitchen for cooking classes, and a tasting most evenings.

Astoria Bookshop

Astoria Fodor's Choice

For over 10 years this Queer, female-owned adorable bookshop in Queens has served as a central hub dedicated to supporting local authors and promoting the literary arts. It’s a refreshing alternative to the big-box book stores and online giants, especially with their in-store speaking and author events. While you're browsing bestsellers, indie titles, nonfiction, poetry, and well-curated staff picks, consider RSVPing to read a tale of your own at their popular Storytelling Show, a free open-mic-style reading series. Alternatively, you can opt to attend one of their author events, which are generally free of charge, but require an RSVP.

Aunt Sally's Praline Shop

French Quarter Fodor's Choice

Satisfy your sweet tooth with an array of pralines, made while you watch. The traditional version is concocted from cane sugar spiked with pecans, but other flavors include chocolate, café au lait, and even bananas Foster. You can also buy hot sauce, prepackaged muffuletta mix, and Bourbon Street glaze, as well as art and books about New Orleans, zydeco CDs, and logo cups and aprons.

B&H Photo & Video

Midtown West Fodor's Choice

Competitive prices, vast inventory (new and used), and a fair return policy make this bustling emporium a favorite with both pros and amateurs looking for audio and video equipment, new cameras, computers, or tech accessories. The store's event space also hosts stellar instructional seminars, usually live streamed. Be sure to leave a few extra minutes for the checkout procedure; bear in mind, too, that the store is closed early Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. B&H is also known for its ingenious, ceiling-height, conveyor-belt system to move packages.

Bal Harbour Shops

Fodor's Choice

Beverly Hills meets the South Florida sun at this swank collection of 100 high-end shops, boutiques, and department stores, which currently holds the title as the country’s greatest revenue-earner per square foot. The open-air enclave includes Florida’s largest Saks Fifth Avenue; an 8,100-square-foot, two-story flagship Salvatore Ferragamo store; and stores by Alexander McQueen, Valentino, and local juggernaut The Webster. Restaurants and cafés, in tropical garden settings, overflow with style-conscious diners. A $400 million expansion is currently under way to add 340,387 square feet of retail.

Baleen

Fodor's Choice

This independent studio makes some of the most stunning, yet affordable, jewelry you can find. Impressively simple, each design manages to be unique, giving them an elegant and modern edge. While the business has outgrown using the same space as both production and store, you can still stop by to shop all the hand-crafted, locally made necklaces, earrings, and bracelets in the light-filled corner shop.

Barn Again

Fodor's Choice
A favorite shop in the Windham area, Barn Again is set in a 200-year-old barn with exposed rafters and paneled ceilings and walls. It's stuffed with well-chosen items, from furnishings to housewares to decorations for your Christmas tree. You can't miss the bright red exterior. It's run by the same ladies as the adjoining Country Suite Bed and Breakfast.

Bartlett's Farm

Town of Nantucket Fodor's Choice

Treat yourself to a view of the agro side of the island with a visit to Bartlett's Farm. Encompassing 200 acres, the farm is overseen by eighth-generation Bartletts. Healthy, tasty prepared foods—within a mini-supermarket—are added incentive to make the trek out. They also offer a variety of farm tours. If you're not up for the trip, a produce truck is parked on Main Street through the summer.

Basically Books

Fodor's Choice

This legendary shop stocks one of Hawaii's largest selections of maps, including topographical and relief maps, and Hilo's largest selection of Hawaiian music (feel free to ask for advice about your selection). It also has a wealth of books about Hawaii, with great choices for children. If you need an umbrella on a rainy Hilo day, this bookstore has plenty of them.

Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar

Downtown Fodor's Choice

At this unusual bookstore and bar, you can relax on an overstuffed chair or sofa while sipping one of 80 wines and champagnes by the glass. The inventory includes more than 20,000 secondhand books, with special strength in Civil War, American history, and North Carolina subjects. It's pet friendly, too, with an "espresso dog bar."

Beacon Hill Books

Beacon Hill Fodor's Choice

This Charles Street town house lined with shelves across four levels is stuffed full of books of every genre, but you won't find a speck of dust in sight. Instead, the place has an art deco--library feel with brass lights, a spiral staircase, cushioned window seats, and a whole heck of a lot of customers. Yes, expect to deal with a crowd, but don't let that stop you from browsing the latest publications or grabbing a coffee and sitting awhile in the hidden rear courtyard.

Beacon Hill Chocolates

Beacon Hill Fodor's Choice

Walking into this store is like entering a sanctum built floor to ceiling of everything chocolate. A front-facing display case is lined with hundreds of local and European artisanal chocolates and truffles that you can buy by the piece or the pound. There are also seasonal chocolate treats, specialty and gourmet bars, bagged candy, and unique gift boxes. This shop even carries a few select flavors of gelato.

Beacon's Closet

Greenpoint Fodor's Choice
The racks are organized by category and color at this trove of secondhand and vintage clothes, so you can find an entire section of black dresses and another just for jeans. Be patient sorting through the huge selection—you might find gems like a vintage Yves Saint Laurent jacket or purple-sequined, peep-toe heels by Marc Jacobs. There are enough brocade gowns and fur (real and fake) to outfit the entire cast of a 1960s period drama.

Beacon's Closet, Park Slope

Park Slope Fodor's Choice
Of the four secondhand clothing shops in a two-block stretch, this one's the best. The well-organized local chain carries vintage and modern styles for men and women. The racks are updated daily, thanks to area fashionistas who sell their cast-offs here. Most threads cost $11 to $23 (the latter for, say, a nearly new Paul Smith jacket from a season or three ago, or an Italian Sisley wool coat). If secondhand isn't your thing, the shop also sells brand-new costume jewelry, hosiery, journals, and hand-poured Paddywax candles in a wide variety of scents and packaging.

Beam & Anchor

Fodor's Choice

This once-dilapidated warehouse houses an upstairs workshop for makers of artisanal goods and an inspiring downstairs retail space where you'll find a carefully curated selection of lifestyle goods for every room in the home, many of them produced locally—some as local as upstairs. Among the treasures, look for warm and soft camp blankets and Navajo rugs with vibrant prints, women's jewelry in a variety of simple-but-beautiful styles, bath salts and soaps, and quite a few larger pieces of distinctive furniture.

Beastly Books

Railyard District Fodor's Choice

Famed Santa Fe resident George R. R. Martin owns this fantasy-and-science-fiction-focused bookstore as well as Jean Cocteau Cinema next-door. Named after Cocteau’s 1946 classic Beauty and the Beast (which was also a television show the Game of Thrones author worked on in the 1980s), the shop features books of all genres, each signed by its writer. This, of course, includes Martin’s many offerings, but also books by Diana Gabaldon, Leonard Maltin, Erica Jong, and Walter Jon Williams.

Bedford Cheese Shop

Fodor's Choice
A cheese lover's dream, this small fromagerie sells everything needed for a gourmet antipasto. The more than 200 artisanal cheeses are arranged by style—hard, soft, Bries, blues, etcetera. Dry goods include crackers, biscuits, premium olive oils, small-batch jams, and chocolates. Prosciutto di Parma and Serrano ham are among the cured meats; you'll also find foie gras, quail eggs, and other comestibles. Expert cheesemongers will help you navigate the offerings.

Beehive Cheese

Fodor's Choice

Just a 10-minute drive southeast of Ogden, this artisan creamery has become famous in recent years for its creamy yet nutty cheddars, including the signature lavender-coffee-rubbed Barely Buzzed variety, which appears on cheese platters at some of the country's top restaurants. Other flavored varieties of note include apple-walnut-smoked and Hatch chili. You can sample and buy them, along with other tasty products, at this friendly shop.

BELLA Mercantile

Fodor's Choice

To find a well-stocked kitchen store in the middle of a small town like La Grande is a welcome surprise. BELLA carries such high-end brands as Oregon's own FINEX, maker of fine cast-iron cookware. Wine lovers will enjoy perusing the many bottles of wines for sale (the original BELLA's was started as a wine shop by owner Beverly Calder, who came from the wine industry); there's also a great selection of chocolates, candy, imported packaged foods, cheese, and other items perfect for the charcuterie board. Shelves are brimming with fine linens, cookbooks, kitchen gadgets and small appliances, housewares, decor, fun gifts, and all the other things one would expect to find in a good kitchen shop. The store also offers its own unique line of quinine water concentrates called Ruby D Tonics, which are naturally sugar-free and come in four flavors; the tonics are brewed at BELLA Main St. Market in Baker City, the original and larger BELLA store that makes a great stop while in that town, too.

Bellewood Acres

Fodor's Choice

Both a farm market popular with kids and a craft distillery that's a hit with adults, this family-owned apple orchard on the main road between Lynden and Bellingham is a fun stop for stocking up on fresh produce and gourmet snacks and sampling house-made brandy, vodka, and gin. The on-site café is popular for breakfast and lunch, offers hard ciders and beers on tap, and—naturally—serves delicious apple pie.

Bellocq Tea Atelier

Greenpoint Fodor's Choice
This jewel box of a tea shop is a bit out of the way, but it's a must for tea aficionados. Bellocq sources organic and exotic teas from China, India, and Japan, and sells them as single-origin varieties or custom blends. Though the shop isn’t a full-service tea salon, you can always find a pot or two brewed for tasting. With their elegant yellow canisters, Bellocq teas make great gifts.

Better Than Jam

Fodor's Choice
Stocked with clothes, jewelry, accessories, art, local zines, bath products, and housewares all handmade in New York's five boroughs, this store, attached to the Shops at the Loom, is the perfect place to find distinctive gifts and souvenirs. The space also doubles as a communal art studio, with workshops, classes, and open hours available to the public. It's closed Tuesday–Thursday.

Bi-Rite Market

Fodor's Choice

San Francisco is one of the culinary centers of the world, and this universally adored grocery store is its beating heart. It's a farmers' market every day inside and well worth browsing around to see the bounty of Northern California, from peak summer tomatoes to local king salmon, plus all kinds of goodies from small producers. Bi-Rite also partners with craft brewers to create one-of-a-kind editions of favorite bubbles and brews. Buy a local peach or blood orange to snack on before strolling across the street for a scoop of salted caramel ice cream from Bi-Rite's equally beloved creamery.

Big Horn Galleries

Fodor's Choice

At one of Wyoming's most respected galleries of Western and wildlife art, you'll find sculptures and paintings by more than 75 artists, including James Bama, Chris Navarro, and Vic Payne.

Big Island Candies

Fodor's Choice

A local legend in the cookie- and chocolate-making business, Big Island Candies is a must-see for connoisseurs of fine chocolates. The packaging is first-rate, which makes these world-class confections the ideal gift or souvenir. Enjoy a free cookie sample and a cup of Kona coffee as you watch through a window as sweets are being made. The store has many interesting products, but it is best known for its chocolate-dipped shortbread cookies.
