SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival

Fodor's Choice

Savannah College of Art and Design's Sidewalk Arts Festival, held the last Saturday in April, is an opportunity to experience Forsyth Park in abundant glory. At no other time in the year is the park so packed with people of all ages, coming out in droves to see students past and present take to the park's winding sidewalks with rainbow colors of chalk. By the day's end, the park is lined with out-of-this-world drawings as far as the eye can see, plus fun stains of chalk throughout the grass and on scraggling artists.

Capital Fringe Festival

Capitol Hill

Since its founding in 2005, the Capital Fringe Festival has grown each year, and it currently offers no fewer than 50 productions (and more than 300 individual performers) over a several-week period in July. Local and national performers display the strange, the political, the surreal, and the avant-garde to eclectic crowds at all times of the day in venues throughout the city. With tickets around $15, this is an affordable theater experience. Tickets go on sale in June.

Don't forget your Fringe Button, a pin that grants the holder access to all festival events and benefits from local retailers.

Be ready to party at the Festival Bar, in Georgetown, where performers, musicians, and patrons rock into the wee hours on festival days.

L.L.Bean Events and Activities

Throughout the summer, L.L.Bean hosts free activities, including concerts, at the L.L.Bean Discovery Park, part of the company's large campus. It's set back from Main Street, along a side street that runs between the company's flagship and home furnishings stores. Additional offerings include family movie nights and wellness classes. In late fall and throughout winter, the L.L.Bean campus hosts "Northern Lights," which features everything from the L.L.Bean Reindeer Barn and free hot cocoa to a "Twinkle Light Tunnel."
