Stilt House Brewery

If you happen to be riding on the Pinellas Trail between Clearwater and Tarpon Springs, this friendly place makes a great stop. (It's also right on Alternate U.S. 19, though it can be hard to spot from the road since it's in a small strip mall.) Beers such as the Pinellas Trail Cream Ale or the Soul Candy Milk Stout are brewed on site, though there are also some guest taps. Note the small room off to the side: it's packed with vintage video games.

Stone Gastropub

Done in rustic-chic style, this downtown tavern stands out for its impressive selection of drinks for all tastes—interesting wines by the glass (both regional and international), flights of artisan whiskeys, excellent craft beers, and well-poured cocktails. The food's good, too, ranging from light tapas to hearty steaks, but the beverage program is what really shines.

Stonecliff Winery

Along the Mississippi River and housed in the historic Dubuque Star Brewery building, Stonecliff offers five tastings of its local wines and a commemorative take-home glass. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the nightlife scene picks up here with live music or karaoke in the piano bar. One Friday of every month features a party with food and drink specials on the deck.

Stoney's Rockin' Country

South Strip

What do you get when you fill a country-theme Texas saloon with slick dance-music-crazed nightclubbers? Madness—10-gallon-hat madness. Behind the Texas-shape neon sign, Stoney's Rockin' Country has all the glam hot-spot fixings: one of the largest dance floors in Nevada, private tables, a VIP lounge, bottle service, and music that can segue from Merle Haggard to Jay-Z. You can't beat the prices either. The location in Town Square makes the club convenient to visit from casinos on the Strip. The smaller Stoney's North Forty is at Santa Fe Station in the northern 'burbs.

Stookey's Club Moderne

Nob Hill

With swing jazz on the soundtrack, bartenders in white jackets, and an immaculately detailed art-deco interior, it's always a trip back to the Bing Crosby–Ella Fitzgerald era at this charming Lower Nob Hill cocktail bar.

Storyhouse Spirits

East Village

This industrial-chic bar and distillery serves up award-winning whiskey and gin. Its full-service restaurant offers an Italian- and Mexican-influenced menu for lunch, dinner, or a snack while you're tasting. Dogs are welcome.

Stowaway Wine Bar

This easygoing spot with just a touch of urbane swankiness is in the center of Seabrook. Stop by after an afternoon at the beach to savor one of a dozen wines (mostly from Oregon and Washington) and a few shareable bites, maybe a charcuterie board or a flatbread topped with bacon jam, mozzarella, pear, and balsamic.

The Strand Ballroom & Theatre

This century-old, five-story theater (operated as Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel until the venue resumed its original name in late 2017), hosts nationally known musical acts: rock, blues, hip-hop, Americana, country, Latin, metal, funk—plus live comedy.

Strong Rope Brewery

Red Hook

This craft brewery proudly produces and serves 100% New York beer, sourcing all of their malts and hops from around the state of New York. As the giant flagship location, it's also a huge communal venue to showcase local creatives, from painters to poets. Some nights there's open mic or live music. Outside, the waterfront sitting area is prime for watching the sun set down the Hudson River with the Statue of Liberty.

Subterranean

Check the letter board over the front door of this Wicker Park storefront for a list of the rising indie rock and hip-hop acts playing there soon, often on their first Chicago gigs. Chances are good they'll be playing a larger venue the next time through. Locals also come for the popular Thursday reggae nights and regular open-mic events.

SummerKeys

If you are walking in Lubec in the summertime and hear music playing, it may be SummerKeys, which draws folks from far and wide for workshops on playing musical instruments. The organization holds concerts for the public from June through August on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Congregational Christian Church ( 46 Main St., at Church St.). See the organization's website for more information.

Summit Lounge

Downtown

With stunning 180-views of Washington, D.C., Summit Bar at the Conrad Hotel is the ideal place for a drink. On a warm summer night, have a frozé at the bar and chat with the lovely staff. If you're craving a snack, you can order bites from Estuary, the hotel's restaurant.

Sunny's Bar

Red Hook

At a glance, this dive bar may conjure up images of drunken sailors and dockworkers, the way it once might have been, having been around since the 1890s. Now called Sunny's Bar—named after the late owner Sunny Balzano who transformed the old saloon—it's not just a lively watering hole, but a community space for local artists and a venue for live music. Stop in to watch many talented local musicians playing blues, jazz, and bluegrass every night (except Monday).

Sunset Tavern

Sunset Tavern attracts just about everyone: punks, college students, postgrad nomads, neighborhood old-timers. They come for the ever-changing eclectic music acts, but there's also a bar in front, Betty's Room, where you can grab a drink before the show.

Superbueno

East Village

If Condesa in Mexico City and the East Village collided it would look and taste a lot like this \"super good\" corner bar, which opened in 2023.  The man behind the bar is Ignacio \"Nacho\" Jimenez, a Mexico native who has been shaking up cocktails in New York for a few decades. Now he has his own bar and what a vision it is: bathed in magenta lights with walls bedecked with lucha libre masks, this lively spot serves up a Negroni made with mole fat-washed mezcal and a tequila-spiked green mango martini, among other creative cocktails.

Superfly Martini Bar & Grill

The unusual name of this stylish little bar and grill has nothing to do with the Curtis Mayfield '70s funk anthem—rather, owner Ryan Webster named this establishment, which is also an artisanal-vodka distillery, after a fishing fly. Appropriately, the bar serves first-rate cocktails, including a refreshing lemon-basil martini. But the food is tasty, too.

Supreme Bar

This dimly lit pizza joint serves tasty frozen slushies and pizza with a few playful gourmet extras from the founder, a former fine-dining chef. With cocktails a step above dive bar levels, and a much cleaner setting than the classic college pub, this spot is a sort of ironic take on the classic New York pizza joint bar. The pizza and scallion garlic knots are very good and worth ordering, too.

Surf Lodge

On scenic Lake Montauk this place is part bar/lounge, part restaurant, part hotel, but the real draws are the young, hipster vibe and über-cool indie bands that play here. The cocktails, like Brazilian-style capirinha and ginger-mint lemonade, are pricey but delicious. Get here early, especially when a popular band is playing; the place packs out to capacity, and you could get turned away. If you want to guarantee your spot, you can reserve table service for a minumum of $1,000 for 6 people or $1,800 for a group of 8; if you stand in line, the price is considerably less (ticket prices vary per event).

The Surf Restaurant & Bar

Locals like to congregate on the outdoor deck here for drinks and good old-fashioned bar food (burgers, wings, nachos). The restaurant has an extensive menu, and there's live music throughout the week.

Susie's Bar

Calistoga's entrant in the dive-bar sweepstakes is on the demure side, but it's a good place to toss back a top-shelf cocktail or a local brew at well below resort prices. Happy hour’s from 4 to 6 pm.

Sweet & Vicious

NoLIta

This unpretentious lounge is high on the sweet factor and luckily low on the vicious attitudes, which helps explain why it's been consistently popular since it opened in 1998. There's a lovely back garden that's more private than the sceney bars you might otherwise hit in SoHo and NoLIta.

Sweet Caroline Karaoke Bar

Miami's only boutique karaoke-only bar is small but mighty. A corner stage and a narrow bar set the scene for enthusiastic singers who don props and sing their hearts out until 4 am, fueled by craft cocktails.

SweetWater Brewing Company

Buckhead

A pair of college roommates started this now-popular craft brewery back in 1997, seizing an opportunity to bring West Coast brew knowledge and flavors to the Southeast. Now you can find SweetWater beers (especially the SweetWater 420 Pale Ale) up and down the East Coast. The taproom serves 24 beers and a full kitchen offers pub food like nachos and wings. Tours and tastings are $10, and sign-up is available online in advance.

Swiss Hotel

Head to the hotel's frozen-in-time wood-paneled watering hole for a blast of Glariffee, a cold and potent cousin to Irish coffee that a relation of Ernest Hemingway supposedly had a hand in creating. The only person who knows the recipe keeps it locked in a safe deposit box.

Sycamore Den

Normal Heights

The heavy use of wood and stone, and accents like banjos and rifles, might give Sycamore Den a masculine vibe, but it's a highly specific and kitschy one: ’70s dads. Though the hipster-pop concept might seem like it was plucked right out of a Tumblr meme, the drinks here are worth the irony, and the calendar is typically filled with great local, acoustic live bands.

T.J. Finley's

Beer-geeks unite! This packed bar offers a dizzying array—usually more than 80—of local and import varieties, including cask ales, and has its own beer club. A menu of pub grub, barbecue, sandwiches, and salads is offered to accompany its brews.

Tabula Rasa Bar

Los Feliz

This unassuming spot feels less like a wine bar and more of a neighborhood watering hole where the servers take the time to chat with customers. But make no mistake: the wine selection is perfection and the snacks are delightful.
